Complete Whirlpool Dryer Drum Drive System – All Parts

Belt + Idler Pulley + Drum Rollers | OEM & Aftermarket | Canadian Business Since 1996 | Fast Canada-Wide Shipping

The Whirlpool dryer drum drive system consists of three components that work together to spin the drum: the drive belt, the idler pulley, and the drum support rollers. All three wear simultaneously over years of use. Understanding how they work together — and which part causes which symptom — helps you diagnose your dryer quickly and order exactly what you need.

The Three Components of the Drum Drive System

1. Drive Belt (341241 / WP341241)

The drive belt is a long, ribbed rubber belt that wraps around the outside of the drum and connects to the motor via the idler pulley. It transfers motor power to the drum, causing it to rotate. A worn, cracked, or broken belt causes the drum to stop spinning entirely or spin inconsistently.

Symptoms of failure: Drum not turning, belt found broken inside cabinet, slapping or flapping noise, drum spins with no resistance when belt is broken.

2. Idler Pulley Assembly (WP691366)

The idler pulley is a spring-loaded tensioner that keeps constant pressure on the drive belt, ensuring it stays taut around the drum and motor pulley. When the pulley bearing wears out or the bracket breaks, belt tension is lost — causing the belt to slip off or go slack. A seized idler pulley also causes a burning smell as the belt rubs against the frozen pulley.

Symptoms of failure: Loud squealing or squeaking, belt slipping off, burning rubber smell, drum not turning (belt intact but loose).

3. Drum Support Rollers (349241 / WP349241)

Drum support rollers are mounted at the rear of the dryer cabinet and bear the full weight of the drum as it rotates. When the roller bearings wear out or develop flat spots, they produce a rhythmic thumping or rumbling noise that repeats with every drum rotation. Severely worn rollers can also cause the drum to bind, putting excessive stress on the belt.

Symptoms of failure: Rhythmic thumping or rumbling, noise present with empty drum, drum wobbles slightly, noise worsens over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all three components need to be replaced at the same time?

Not always, but it's strongly recommended for dryers 5+ years old. All three components wear at the same rate. Replacing them together in one teardown costs almost the same in labour as replacing one, and prevents repeat repairs within months.
