Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Tasting Bad, Flowing Slowly, or Filter Light On? Water Filter EDR7D1B – Restore Clean Water and Ice Fast

A refrigerator water filter that’s past its service life causes bad-tasting water, cloudy ice, slow dispenser flow, and a filter indicator light that won’t reset — all signs it’s time to replace. In most Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators, the water filter is located in the top right corner of the fresh food compartment and is the only barrier between your household water supply and your drinking water and ice. When it reaches the end of its service life — typically 6 months or 200 gallons — filtration efficiency drops, flow rate decreases, and contaminants that were previously captured begin passing through. ⚡ The most commonly replaced consumable in Whirlpool-platform side-by-side refrigerators. Part EDR7D1B is the genuine OEM Whirlpool #7 water filter that restores full filtration performance, correct flow rate, and clears the filter indicator light — directly replacing UKF7003, UKF6001, UKF7001, and all earlier revision numbers.

❓ Is This the Right Part?

This is the correct filter if ALL of the following are true:

  • ✔ Your refrigerator is a Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, or Kenmore side-by-side model
  • ✔ The filter is located in the top right corner of the fresh food compartment (not the base grille)
  • ✔ Your current filter is labelled UKF7003, UKF6001, UKF7001, or EDR7D1 / EDR7D1B
  • ✔ Your filter indicator light is on, or it has been 6+ months since the last replacement

Not sure? Send us your model number — we'll confirm the correct filter before you order.

🔧 Signs Your Filter Needs Replacing

  • Water from the dispenser tastes or smells like chlorine, metal, or plastic
  • Ice cubes are cloudy, have an off taste, or smell unusual
  • Water dispenser flow rate is noticeably slower than normal
  • Filter indicator light is on or flashing on the control panel
  • It has been 6 or more months since the last filter replacement
  • You’ve used 200 or more gallons since the last replacement

✔ If these signs match, the EDR7D1B is the correct replacement filter for your refrigerator.

✔ In most cases, installing a new filter restores full water quality, correct flow rate, and clears the filter light immediately after reset.

⚠️ Set a Reminder When You Install:
The most common reason filters fail early is forgetting to replace them on schedule. When you install the new EDR7D1B, reset the filter indicator light immediately (hold the filter reset button for 3 seconds on most models) and set a calendar reminder for 6 months out. Replacing on schedule — not just when the light comes on — ensures consistent filtration performance and prevents contaminant breakthrough.

⚙️ Installation

Skill Level: EASY — 2–5 minutes. No tools required. No need to disconnect power or water supply for filter replacement. Open the fresh food compartment, locate the filter housing in the top right corner, turn the old filter a quarter-turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out. Insert the new EDR7D1B filter, push in and turn a quarter-turn clockwise until it locks, then run 4 gallons (approximately 5 minutes) of water through the dispenser to flush the new filter before use. Reset the filter indicator light by holding the filter reset button for 3 seconds.

✓ Compatible Refrigerators

Compatible with a wide range of Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, and Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators that use the UKF7003 / #7 filter family. Contact us with your model number to confirm compatibility before ordering.

💡 Pro Tip

Flush 4 Gallons Before Drinking:
New filters contain carbon fines — harmless but they make the first few glasses of water appear grey or cloudy. Always flush at least 4 gallons (about 5 minutes of continuous dispensing) through the new filter before using the water or ice for consumption. Skipping the flush is the #1 cause of “my new filter made the water worse” complaints — it’s not the filter, it’s the carbon fines clearing out. After flushing, water should be clear and taste noticeably cleaner than before.
