A dryer that won’t advance through its cycle, runs indefinitely, or stops mid-cycle almost always has a failed dryer timer. In most Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana dryers, the cycle timer is the electromechanical control that advances the dryer through timed heat and cool-down phases — when it fails, the cycle freezes at one point, the dryer won’t shut off automatically, or it won’t start at all. When it fails, clothes may come out over-dried, damp, or the dryer may run until manually switched off. ⚡ Common failure point in Whirlpool-platform mechanical timer dryers. Skill Level: Easy — 20–30 min DIY. Unplug the dryer before beginning any service. The timer is located behind the control panel — remove the end caps and lift the panel to access it. Photograph the wire harness connections before disconnecting, then transfer the harness connector-by-connector to the new timer in the same positions. Remove the timer mounting screws, swap in the new unit, and reinstall the knob. Do not force the knob shaft — align it with the flat side of the shaft before pressing on.
