XWFE GE Refrigerator Water Filter – Fix Your Fridge With a Filter Warning Light, Restricted Water Flow, or Expired Filter
OEM Replacement | Embedded RFID Chip | Leak-Detecting Technology | Fast Canadian Shipping | Fits 300+ GE Refrigerator Models
The XWFE is the OEM water filter for GE refrigerators equipped with RFID filter recognition. It replaces the previous XWF filter and is the only filter that will work correctly in XWFE-compatible refrigerators — non-OEM filters without the embedded RFID chip will trigger persistent filter warning lights, restrict water flow, or display "ERR" on the control panel. The XWFE is certified to reduce chlorine-resistant cysts, lead, select pharmaceuticals (including ibuprofen, progesterone, atenolol, trimethoprim, and fluoxetine), and up to 50 other impurities. Filter life is six months or 170 gallons. This part supersedes XWF, WR01F04788, and WR01F04493.

The XWFE filter contains an embedded RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) chip that communicates directly with the refrigerator's main control board. The chip uniquely identifies the filter, tracks its usage and remaining life, and enables the refrigerator's Leak-Detecting Sensing Technology — which automatically shuts off the water valve if moisture is detected at the filter housing. When the filter expires or is installed improperly, the RFID chip signals the control board to restrict water flow through the dispenser until a new genuine XWFE filter is installed. Generic aftermarket filters without the RFID chip will not satisfy the refrigerator's filter recognition system and will result in continued error states.

✓ Installation Tips
- No tools required and no need to shut off the water supply — the filter housing has an internal shutoff
- Dispense water from the door for a few seconds before replacing the filter to relieve line pressure
- Remove the old filter by twisting a quarter-turn counterclockwise and pulling it straight out
- Insert the new XWFE filter and twist clockwise until it seats firmly
- Reset the filter status indicator on your refrigerator's control panel (refer to your model's manual for the reset procedure)
- Flush ~2–3 litres (½ gallon) of water through the dispenser to purge air and loose carbon from the new filter before drinking
-
Tech Tip: Only a genuine XWFE filter with the embedded RFID chip will reset the filter warning and restore full water flow. Non-chipped generic filters will not satisfy the refrigerator's filter recognition system.
- Replacement time: approximately 15–20 minutes

✓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't a generic XWFE-compatible filter work in my GE refrigerator?
GE refrigerators that use the XWFE filter require the embedded RFID chip to communicate with the main control board. Generic aftermarket filters without the chip will trigger persistent filter warning lights, restrict water flow, or display "ERR" on the control panel. Only a genuine OEM XWFE filter will satisfy the refrigerator's filter recognition system and restore full water and ice dispensing.
What is the difference between XWFE and XWF?
The XWFE replaces the XWF and adds an embedded RFID chip and Leak-Detecting Sensing Technology. The size, shape, and installation method are identical — the XWFE is a direct drop-in replacement for the XWF. If your refrigerator previously used an XWF, it now requires the XWFE.
How do I reset the filter status light after installing the XWFE?
After installing the new filter, press and hold the "Reset Filter" or "Filter Reset" button on your refrigerator's control panel for 3–5 seconds until the indicator light turns off or changes color. The exact procedure varies by model — refer to your owner's manual. The RFID chip in the new filter automatically notifies the control board upon installation.
What does it mean when my GE refrigerator displays "ERR" after a filter change?
"ERR" indicates the refrigerator's control board cannot read the filter's RFID chip. This typically means a non-OEM filter without an RFID chip has been installed. Replace it with a genuine XWFE filter to resolve the error and restore water and ice flow. Contact us if the error persists after installing a genuine XWFE.
