GE Washer Lid Lock Assembly WW03F00016: The Complete Canadian Repair Guide

Is your GE top-load washer refusing to start, stopping mid-cycle, or flashing a lid lock error code? You’re not alone — and the fix is usually straightforward. In most cases, the culprit is the lid lock assembly, a small but critical safety component that controls whether your washer will run at all.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the WW03F00016 GE Washer Lid Lock Assembly — what it does, how to diagnose a failure, how to replace it yourself, and which GE washer models it fits. We’ve been supplying appliance parts to Canadian customers since 1996, and this is one of the most common repairs we see on GE top-load washers.

What Does the Lid Lock Do?

The lid lock assembly serves two critical functions in your GE top-load washer:

  1. Safety lockout: It physically prevents the lid from being opened during the spin cycle, when the drum is rotating at high speed. Opening the lid mid-spin could cause serious injury.
  2. Control board signal: It sends an electrical signal to the washer’s control board confirming the lid is securely closed. Without this signal, the control board will not allow the wash cycle to begin — no matter how many times you press Start.

When the lid lock fails — whether due to a worn solenoid, a failed switch, or a broken wiring connection — the washer treats it as an open lid and refuses to operate. This is a deliberate safety design, not a malfunction of the control board.

Symptoms of a Failed GE Washer Lid Lock

A failing lid lock assembly typically produces one or more of these symptoms:

  • Washer won’t start at all — you press Start and nothing happens, or the machine beeps and stops immediately
  • Lid lock error code displayed — GE washers typically show “Ld” or a flashing lid lock indicator light
  • Washer stops mid-cycle — the machine starts normally but stops before or during the spin cycle
  • Won’t advance to spin — the washer completes the wash and rinse but pauses indefinitely before spinning
  • Clicking sound without engagement — you can hear the lid lock solenoid clicking but it never fully engages
  • Intermittent errors — the washer works sometimes but randomly throws lid lock errors

Intermittent errors are often caused by a loose wiring connection rather than a fully failed lid lock — worth checking the connector before replacing the part.

How to Diagnose a GE Washer Lid Lock Failure

Before ordering a replacement, confirm the lid lock is actually the problem with these diagnostic steps:

Step 1: Check the Error Code

GE top-load washers display fault codes on the control panel. A “Ld” code or a flashing lid lock light is a direct indicator of a lid lock issue. Consult your model’s service manual for the full list of error codes.

Step 2: Inspect the Lid Strike

The lid strike is the small plastic tab on the lid that physically engages the lock mechanism. If it’s cracked, broken, or missing, the lid lock sensor won’t register the lid as closed — even if the lock assembly itself is perfectly fine. This is a cheap fix if the strike is the issue.

Step 3: Test with a Multimeter

Unplug the washer. Disconnect the wiring harness from the lid lock assembly. Set your multimeter to continuity mode and test across the switch terminals:

  • Lid closed: Should show continuity
  • Lid open: Should show no continuity

If you get no continuity with the lid closed, the lid lock switch has failed and the assembly needs replacement.

Step 4: Check the Wiring Harness

Inspect the connector at the lid lock for corrosion, bent pins, or loose connections. A poor connection can mimic a failed lid lock and produce the same error codes. Clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner and reseat it firmly before replacing the part.

Step 5: Reset the Washer

Unplug the washer for 60 seconds, then plug it back in. If the error clears and the washer runs normally, the issue may be a temporary control board glitch rather than a failed lid lock. If the error returns within a few cycles, the lid lock assembly needs replacement.

How to Replace the GE Washer Lid Lock Assembly (Step-by-Step)

Tools needed: Phillips screwdriver, putty knife or panel clip tool, needle-nose pliers
Estimated time: 20–45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet. Never work on an appliance with power connected.
  2. Release the top panel clips — insert a putty knife about 2.5 inches from each front corner of the top panel and press inward to release the spring clips. Lift the top panel up and back.
  3. Locate the lid lock assembly — it’s mounted at the front of the cabinet, just inside where the lid closes.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness — squeeze the connector tab and pull straight out. Note the orientation before disconnecting.
  5. Remove the mounting screws — typically 1–2 Phillips screws securing the lid lock to the cabinet.
  6. Install the new WW03F00016 — position it in the same orientation, reinstall the mounting screws, and reconnect the wiring harness until it clicks.
  7. Lower the top panel and press down firmly at the front corners until the clips snap back into place.
  8. Plug the washer back in and run a test cycle to confirm the lid lock error is cleared and the machine operates normally.

⚠️ Important: Do not attempt to bypass the lid lock at any point. It is a critical safety device. If the new lid lock doesn’t resolve the issue, the problem may be with the wiring harness or control board — contact us and we’ll help you diagnose further.

New vs. Used: Which Should You Buy?

We offer the WW03F00016 in two conditions:

  • New (OEM): Genuine GE factory part. Exact electrical specifications, guaranteed fit, and full reliability. The right choice for any washer you plan to keep using long-term. We currently have 24 units in stock.
  • Used: A tested pull from a working washer, inspected before listing. Ideal for older machines where you want to minimize repair cost, or as a temporary fix while sourcing a new part. Limited availability — one unit.

For most customers, the new OEM part is the better investment — at $75.98, it’s an inexpensive repair that restores full washer function and avoids the risk of a used part failing again soon after installation.
