- Putty knife or flat panel clips tool (to release cabinet clips)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Torx T20 screwdriver (some models)
- Needle-nose pliers (optional, for spring tension)
- Smartphone or camera (to photograph belt routing before removal)
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
- Unplug the dryer. Disconnect from the wall outlet or flip the circuit breaker. For gas dryers, also turn off the gas supply valve.
- Pull the dryer away from the wall to give yourself working room. You'll need access to the front of the cabinet.
- Open the top panel. Insert a putty knife 2–3 inches from each front corner of the top panel and press inward to release the spring clips. Lift the top panel up and lean it against the wall.
- Photograph the belt routing. Before removing anything, take a clear photo of how the belt is routed around the idler pulley and motor shaft. This is your reference for reassembly.
- Disconnect the door switch wiring. Open the dryer door and remove the two screws securing the front panel to the cabinet (inside the door opening, top corners). Disconnect the door switch wire harness.
- Remove the front panel. Lift the front panel slightly to disengage the bottom clips, then pull it away from the cabinet. Set it aside.
- Support the drum. With the front panel removed, the drum is only supported at the rear. Support it with one hand or prop it up while you work.
- Release the belt tension. Push the idler pulley toward the motor to release belt tension, then slip the belt off the motor shaft and idler pulley. The drum can now be lifted out of the cabinet.
- Remove the drum. Lift the drum straight up and out of the cabinet. Set it on a clean surface.
- Remove the old idler assembly. The idler assembly is mounted on a pivot bracket on the motor mounting plate. Slide or unclip the idler bracket from its mounting point (varies by model — some slide off a post, others have a retaining clip).
- Install the new idler assembly. Slide or clip the new WP691366 idler assembly onto the mounting bracket in the same orientation as the old one. Ensure it pivots freely.
- Reinstall the drum. Lower the drum back into the cabinet, resting the rear drum shaft on the rear bearing or rollers.
- Route the belt. Using your reference photo, route the belt around the drum (ribbed side against the drum), then thread it under the idler pulley and around the motor shaft. Push the idler toward the motor to create tension, then release — the spring should hold the belt taut.
- Reinstall the front panel. Reconnect the door switch wire harness, engage the bottom clips, and secure the top screws inside the door opening.
- Close the top panel. Lower the top panel and press down at the front corners until the spring clips engage.
- Test the repair. Plug in the dryer and run a short cycle. Listen for quiet, smooth drum rotation. No squealing = successful repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does this repair take?
30–60 minutes for most Whirlpool-platform dryers. First-timers may take up to 90 minutes. The most time-consuming step is removing and reinstalling the front panel and drum.
Do I need any special tools?
A putty knife or panel clips tool is the only specialty tool needed to release the top panel clips. Everything else requires standard hand tools (Phillips screwdriver, possibly Torx T20).
What if the belt routing is wrong after reassembly?
If the drum doesn't spin or the belt slips off immediately after reassembly, the belt is likely misrouted. The belt must go: around the drum (ribbed side in) → under the idler pulley → around the motor shaft. See our belt routing diagram page for a visual reference.
