The KitchenAid K45SS is the entry-level Classic Series 4.5-quart tilt-head stand mixer — one of the longest-running and most widely repaired KitchenAid models. It uses a 275-watt AC motor with a 10-speed planetary drive. The K45SS shares many internal components with the KSM75 and KSM85, and its parts are widely available in both OEM and aftermarket.

The K45SS uses a 4.5-quart stainless steel bowl that locks into the base with a quarter-turn. Its worm gear is plastic and prone to wear under heavy dough loads — the most common repair on this model. The carbon brushes and speed control board are also frequent failure points on older units. The K45SS bowl and accessories are NOT compatible with 5-quart Artisan models.

⚠️ Pro tip: The K45SS worm gear is the #1 repair on this model. Always replace the gear and grease pack together — never just the gear. Old contaminated grease will destroy a new gear within weeks. While you're in there, inspect the carbon brushes — if they're under 1/4" long, replace them at the same time.

Unplug before any repair. Access the worm gear by removing the single screw on the back of the head and lifting the motor cover. Clean all old grease completely before repacking. The K45SS head lock screw should be finger-tight only — overtightening cracks the housing.
