The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device rated at 196°F. When your dryer overheats — usually from a clogged vent or lint screen — the fuse permanently blows and cuts power to the motor or heating circuit. On many Whirlpool models, a blown thermal fuse will prevent the dryer from starting entirely, not just from heating.
Symptoms: Dryer completely dead, no tumbling, no heat, no response
→ Shop WP3392519 Thermal Fuse (OEM & XPart)The 279816 thermal cut-off kit includes both the 309°F thermal fuse and the 250°F high-limit thermostat. If either component has failed due to overheating, the dryer may not start. Replacing the full kit is best practice to address both safety components at once.
Symptoms: Dryer dead after overheating event, repeated fuse failures
→ Shop 279816 Thermal Cut-Off KitA faulty door switch can mimic a thermal fuse failure — the dryer won't start because it thinks the door is open. Test the door switch with a multimeter for continuity when pressed. This is a quick, inexpensive fix if the thermal fuse tests good.
Symptoms: Dryer won't start, light inside drum still works, no tumbling
→ Contact us for help identifying the right door switchIf the thermal fuse and door switch both test good, the start switch or timer may have failed. These components are less common failure points but can cause a completely dead dryer. A multimeter test on the start switch terminals will confirm.
Symptoms: No response when start button pressed, all other components test good
→ Contact us for diagnosis helpYes — on many Whirlpool models, the thermal fuse is wired into the motor circuit, not just the heating circuit. A blown fuse can prevent the dryer from tumbling or starting at all, not just from producing heat. The WP3392519 thermal fuse is the most common fix.
Unplug the dryer, remove the back panel, locate the thermal fuse on the exhaust duct or blower housing, disconnect the two wire terminals, and test across them with a multimeter set to continuity. A good fuse beeps or reads near 0 ohms. No reading means it's blown. See our Dryer Not Heating guide for full steps.
The most common Whirlpool dryer thermal fuse is WP3392519 (also sold as 3392519, 3388651, 694511, 80005). Shop WP3392519 at XPart Supply.
If your dryer overheated badly, replacing the full 279816 thermal cut-off kit (fuse + high-limit thermostat) is best practice. Both components are stressed by the same overheating event.
