Required Tools:

Step-by-Step Installation:

1. Disconnect Power: Unplug the dryer or turn off the circuit breaker. For gas dryers, also shut off the gas supply valve.
2. Access the Heating Element: Remove the lower front access panel or rear panel (varies by model). Most Whirlpool/Kenmore dryers require removing 2-4 screws on the lower front panel.
3. Locate the Element: The heating element housing is typically located on the right side (front-access models) or center-rear (rear-access models) of the dryer cabinet.
4. Disconnect Wiring: Take a photo of wire connections for reference. Disconnect the wire harness connectors from the heating element terminals. Note the position of any thermal fuses or thermostats attached to the housing.
5. Remove Mounting Hardware: Remove the screws or clips securing the heating element housing to the dryer cabinet (typically 2-3 screws).
6. Remove Old Element: Carefully pull the heating element assembly out of the cabinet. Watch for any additional wires or sensors that may be attached.
7. Install New Element: Position the new heating element assembly in the same location. Ensure any thermal fuses or thermostats are properly seated against the housing.
8. Secure Housing: Reinstall mounting screws or clips to secure the element housing to the cabinet. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten.
9. Reconnect Wiring: Reconnect all wire harness connectors to the proper terminals. Ensure connections are tight and secure.
10. Reassemble Cabinet: Replace the access panel(s) and secure with screws.
11. Restore Power: Plug in the dryer or turn the circuit breaker back on. For gas dryers, turn the gas supply back on.
12. Test Operation: Run a timed dry cycle for 10-15 minutes with damp towels. Verify the dryer produces heat and the drum gets warm. Check for any unusual odors or sounds.

Before installing the new element, use a multimeter to test for continuity. Set the meter to the lowest ohms setting and touch the probes to the element terminals. A good 5400W/240V element should read approximately 10-12 ohms. No reading (infinite resistance) means the element is open/broken. A reading of zero ohms indicates a short circuit.

Critical: Always check the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat mounted on or near the heating element housing. These safety devices often fail when an element burns out, and they MUST be replaced if blown—otherwise your new element won't work. Test them for continuity; they should read close to zero ohms when good.

Airflow is key: A clogged lint screen, blocked exhaust vent, or restricted blower wheel causes 80% of heating element failures. Before installing the new element, thoroughly clean the entire exhaust system from the dryer to the outside vent. This prevents premature failure of your new $60+ element.

Break-in period: Run the first 2-3 cycles on low or medium heat to allow the new element coils to properly cure and expand. This extends element life.
