The high-limit thermostat is a safety device mounted on the rear of the heating element housing. When the dryer exceeds its maximum safe operating temperature — typically due to a clogged vent or failed cycling thermostat — the high-limit thermostat cuts power to the heating element. If the thermostat fails open, the dryer produces no heat. If it fails closed, the dryer overheats and the thermal fuse blows. Part 6931EL3001F is the current OEM replacement for the discontinued 6931EL3001E.
Symptoms of a Failed High-Limit Thermostat
- Dryer runs but produces no heat
- Dryer overheats and shuts off mid-cycle
- Thermal fuse blows repeatedly after replacement
- No continuity across the thermostat at room temperature (should read continuity)
- Dryer takes multiple cycles to dry a normal load

If your thermal fuse (6931EL3003D) blew, the high-limit thermostat is the next component to test — a failed thermostat is what allowed the temperature to spike high enough to blow the fuse. Replace both together to avoid a repeat failure. While you’re in there, clean the exhaust duct from dryer to exterior cap.

- Test with a multimeter: at room temperature, the thermostat should show continuity (closed). OL = failed open
