Common Symptoms
- Inadequate or inconsistent cooling despite normal controls and airflow
- Frost or ice buildup associated with abnormal evaporator operation
- Limited cooling that may result from refrigerant leakage or restricted refrigerant flow
Check Before Replacing
- Verify the refrigerator temperature setting and confirm that doors close and seal normally.
- Check whether the compressor and evaporator fan operate during a cooling cycle, without removing sealed-system components.
- Inspect accessible evaporator-area surfaces for abnormal frost patterns or heavy ice buildup, while recognizing that these observations do not by themselves confirm a defective evaporator.
- Have a qualified appliance technician perform sealed-system pressure, leak, and refrigerant-flow tests before condemning the assembly.
Pro Tip
An evaporator assembly is part of the sealed refrigerant system; inadequate cooling or frost buildup can also be caused by airflow, defrost, compressor, control, or refrigerant problems, so diagnosis should precede replacement.
