How do I know if my refrigerator door gasket needs to be replaced?
The easiest test is the dollar bill test: place a dollar bill between the door gasket and the refrigerator cabinet, close the door, and try to pull the bill out. If it slides out easily with little resistance, the gasket isn't sealing properly. You should feel the gasket gripping the bill. Other signs of a failing gasket include visible cracks, tears, or warping in the rubber; the door not staying closed or popping open; frost buildup inside the refrigerator; the compressor running constantly; condensation on the door; and higher energy bills. A worn gasket lets warm, humid air into the refrigerator, forcing it to work harder to stay cold. Replacing the gasket restores the airtight seal and improves cooling efficiency.
