Why is my dishwasher not cleaning the top rack?

A dishwasher that cleans the bottom rack fine but leaves the top rack dirty is one of the most common complaints — and there are several possible causes:

Failed diverter motor (most likely on newer Whirlpool models). The diverter motor alternates water pressure between the lower and upper spray arms. If it fails in the lower position, all water goes to the bottom spray arm and the top rack gets nothing. This is the most common cause on Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag dishwashers made after 2013 that use a single wash pump with a diverter system. Replacing the W10843811 diverter motor restores water flow to the upper spray arm.
