Instead of splitting water pressure across all spray arms at once (which weakens cleaning power), the diverter alternates full pressure between zones in a timed sequence — lower spray arm, then upper spray arm, then back — so each zone gets concentrated, high-pressure water for thorough cleaning. When the diverter motor fails, it gets stuck in one position — typically directing all water to the lower spray arm only.
