Dishwasher Not Draining? W10876537 Drain Pump – Fix Standing Water Fast

If your Whirlpool dishwasher has standing water in the bottom after a cycle, won’t drain, or displays a drain error code, the drain pump is the most likely culprit. In most Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag dishwashers, the drain pump is responsible for expelling dirty water from the tub at the end of each cycle — when the motor burns out, the impeller jams, or bearings wear, water stays in the tub and cycles fail to complete. ⚡ One of the most common dishwasher failures across Whirlpool-built platforms. Part W10876537 is the genuine OEM replacement drain pump that restores full drainage and normal cycle completion.

❓ Is This the Right Part?

This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:

  • ✔ Dishwasher powers on and cycles run normally until drain phase
  • ✔ Drain hose and filter have been checked and are clear of clogs
  • ✔ Garbage disposal knockout plug removed (if newly installed)
  • ✔ Door latch and control board are functioning correctly
  • ✔ ONLY problem is water remaining in the tub, no drainage, humming with no water movement, or active drain error code

Not sure? Send us your model number — we'll confirm before you order.

🔧 Common Symptoms

  • Standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher after cycle completes — most common complaint
  • Dishwasher won’t drain at all — pump motor failed
  • Humming noise from pump area but no water movement — impeller jammed
  • Grinding or rattling from pump area during drain phase — debris in impeller or bearing failure
  • Dishwasher stops mid-cycle with water inside — pump failure triggering cycle abort
  • Drain error code displayed on control panel

✔ If these symptoms match, the drain pump is the most likely failed component in the system.

✔ In most cases, replacing the drain pump restores full drainage and normal cycle operation immediately.

📦 Part Details

⚠️ Check Before You Order:
Before replacing the drain pump, check the dishwasher filter and drain hose for clogs — a blocked filter or kinked hose causes identical standing water symptoms at a fraction of the cost. If the pump hums but no water moves, inspect the pump inlet for broken glass or debris jamming the impeller before ordering a replacement.

⚙️ Installation Notes

Skill Level: MODERATE — 30–45 minutes. Disconnect power to the dishwasher before beginning any repair. The drain pump is located at the bottom of the dishwasher tub — access requires removing the lower spray arm, filter assembly, and pump cover. Disconnect the two wire harness connectors and the drain hose clamp before removing the pump. When installing the new pump, ensure the inlet port is clear of debris and the drain hose clamp is fully seated before restoring power and running a test cycle.

💡 Pro Tip

Photograph harness connectors before disconnecting:
The W10876537 drain pump has two harness connectors that must be reattached in the correct orientation. A quick photo before removal eliminates guesswork on reassembly. While the pump cover is off, inspect the wash pump impeller area as well — debris that jammed the drain pump often originates from the wash zone and may cause a repeat failure if not cleared.

Why is there standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

Standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle completes means the water isn't draining properly. This can be caused by several issues:

  1. Clogged filter — The most common cause. Remove and clean the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub. Food particles, grease, and debris accumulate and block water flow.
  2. Clogged or kinked drain hose — Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks or clogs. The hose should have a "high loop" (secured high under the counter) to prevent backflow.
  3. Garbage disposal blockage — If your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, run the disposal to clear it. Also verify the knockout plug was removed when the disposal was installed.
  4. Air gap clog — If you have an air gap (chrome cylinder on the sink), remove the cap and clean out any debris.
  5. Failed drain pump — If all the above are clear, the drain pump has likely failed. Signs include: humming sound but no water movement (impeller stuck), grinding noises (debris in pump), or no sound at all during drain cycle (motor burned out). Replacing the drain pump resolves the issue.

A small amount of water (about 1 cup) in the very bottom of the sump area is normal — it keeps the pump seal lubricated. But if water covers the entire bottom of the tub or is more than an inch deep, there's a drainage problem that needs attention.
