If your Whirlpool or KitchenAid dishwasher is filling with water but dishes come out dirty, water pressure from the spray arms is weak or absent, or you hear a loud humming or grinding noise during the wash cycle, the circulation pump and motor assembly is the most common failed component. In most Whirlpool-platform dishwashers, the circulation pump forces pressurized water through the upper and lower spray arms throughout the wash and rinse cycles. When the motor bearing seizes, the impeller jams from debris, or the pump housing cracks, water pressure drops to zero and the dishwasher stops cleaning entirely. ⚡ Common failure point on Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, and Maytag dishwasher platforms. Skill Level: Moderate — 45–60 minutes. Disconnect power and turn off the water supply before beginning. Access the circulation pump by removing the lower spray arm, filter assembly, and tub floor panel. Disconnect the wire harness and water inlet/outlet hoses, then unbolt the pump assembly from the tub base. Install the new assembly in reverse order, ensuring all hose clamps are fully seated and the harness connector clicks into place. Run a short cycle and check for leaks at all connections before returning the dishwasher to service.
