OEM Replacement | Controls Light, Fan & Dispenser | Fast Shipping Across Canada & USA
The W11457217 is the OEM door switch for Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana refrigerators. This switch signals the refrigerator when the door is open or closed — controlling the interior light, the evaporator fan, and in some models the water and ice dispenser. When it fails, the light may stay on or off regardless of door position, the fan may run continuously, or the dispenser may stop working entirely. Snap-in installation, no tools required, 5–15 minutes.

The door switch is a plunger or magnetic mechanism mounted in the door frame that detects door position and sends the appropriate signal to the control board. A faulty switch can cause the interior light to stay on (warming the fridge and wasting energy), the evaporator fan to run with the door open (causing frost buildup), or the dispenser to become unresponsive. Contact wear and corrosion are the most common failure modes.
This switch directly resolves: interior light staying on when door is closed, interior light not turning on when door is opened, water or ice dispenser not responding, evaporator fan running continuously with door closed, and fridge running warmer than normal due to heat from a stuck-on light.

Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the switch in the door frame — typically in the upper corner of the fresh food compartment. Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the switch out of its mounting hole. Disconnect the wiring connector. Connect the new switch and snap it firmly into the mounting hole. Plug in and test by opening and closing the door to confirm the light, fan, and dispenser respond correctly. Total time: 5–15 minutes.

How do I test if my door switch is faulty? Open the fridge door and manually press the switch plunger with your finger. The interior light should turn off and the fan should stop. If the light stays on or the fan keeps running, the switch has failed. See our full guide: Refrigerator Light Stays On or Won't Turn On – Door Switch Fix.
Does this switch also control the dispenser? On models with an in-door water and ice dispenser, yes — the door switch signals the control board to enable or disable the dispenser based on door position. A failed switch can cause the dispenser to stop working entirely.
Is this a DIY repair? Very easy — snap-in replacement, no special tools required. Total time: 5–15 minutes. Contact us if you need model-specific guidance.
