If your Whirlpool or Maytag top-load washer won’t start because the lid won’t latch, the door strike is the most common cause. In most Whirlpool WTW and Maytag MVW series top-load washers, the door strike is the plastic tab mounted on the lid that engages the lid lock switch — when it cracks, breaks, or snaps off, the switch never detects a closed lid and the washer refuses to run. When it fails, the washer may sit idle at the start of a cycle, display a lid lock fault code, or stop mid-fill even though the lid appears fully closed. ⚡ One of the most frequently broken mechanical components on Whirlpool and Maytag top-load washers. Close the lid, restore power, and run a test cycle to confirm the lid lock engages and the cycle advances normally.
