Tools Needed:

• Phillips screwdriver or 1/4" nut driver
• Flashlight
• Work gloves

Installation:

1. Disconnect power — unplug the washer or turn off the breaker.
2. Open the washer lid and inspect the drum interior.
3. Locate the damaged baffle — look for cracks, breaks, or missing pieces.
4. Remove the old baffle:Most baffles are secured with 2–4 screws from inside the drum.Remove the screws using a Phillips screwdriver or nut driver.If the baffle is snap-fit (no screws), release the retaining tabs by pressing or prying gently.Pull the baffle away from the drum wall.
5. Clean the mounting area — remove any old residue, detergent buildup, or debris from the drum wall where the baffle mounts.
6. Position the new W11460395 baffle:Align the mounting holes in the baffle with the holes in the drum wall.Ensure the baffle is oriented correctly — the curved side should face the direction of drum rotation (check the other baffles for reference).
7. Secure the baffle:Install the mounting screws and tighten snugly. Don't overtighten — plastic can crack.For snap-fit baffles, press firmly until the tabs click into place.
8. Verify installation:Push on the baffle — it should be secure with no wobble.Run your hand along the edges — no sharp protrusions that could snag clothes.
9. Inspect the other baffles — check for cracks or damage. Replace any that are compromised.
10. Restore power. Run a short spin cycle with no clothes to verify the baffle is secure and no rattling occurs. Then wash a normal load to confirm proper tumbling action.

If one baffle broke, inspect all the others — they're the same age and endure the same stress. Baffles fail from a combination of age, heat cycles, detergent exposure, and mechanical stress. If one has cracked, the others are likely weakened and close to failure. Check each baffle for hairline cracks, especially around the mounting screw holes (the highest stress points). Press on each baffle — it should be rigid. If it flexes or feels brittle, replace it. Baffle cracks usually start at the screw holes — the plastic is thinnest there and the screws create stress concentration points. Over-tightening screws during installation accelerates cracking. Tighten screws just enough to hold the baffle securely — "snug" not "tight." Rattling diagnosis: if you hear rattling during spin but can't see a broken baffle, the broken piece may have fallen to the bottom of the drum. Reach under the drum basket (through the agitator opening or drum holes) and feel for loose plastic pieces. Also check the pump filter or drain hose — broken baffle pieces can travel through the system and jam the drain pump. Preventing future baffle failure: avoid washing heavy items like shoes, tools, or large metal objects in the washer. These items can impact the baffles with enough force to crack them. Also, don't overload the washer — excessive weight stresses the baffles during tumbling.
