Refrigerator Running Warm or Frosting Over? Evaporator Fan Motor WG03F01589 — Fix Airflow Failure Fast
A refrigerator that runs warm, builds up excessive frost, or has a freezer that cools but a fridge section that doesn’t almost always has a failed evaporator fan motor. In most GE and Hotpoint top-freezer refrigerators, the evaporator fan motor circulates cold air from the evaporator coils throughout both the freezer and fresh food compartments. When it fails, cold air stops circulating — the freezer may stay cold while the fridge warms up, or frost builds rapidly on the evaporator coils due to lack of airflow. ⚡ One of the most common cooling failures in GE-built top-freezer refrigerators. Part WG03F01589 (now superseded by WG03F05799) is the OEM replacement that restores proper cold air circulation and even cooling throughout the refrigerator.
📌 Note: Part WG03F01589 has been superseded by WG03F05799. This listing covers the original part number. Both are direct replacements for the same application.
❓ Is This the Right Part?
This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:
- ✔ Freezer compartment is cold but fresh food section is warm
- ✔ Excessive frost buildup on evaporator coils (behind freezer back panel)
- ✔ Fan blade is not obstructed and spins freely by hand
- ✔ ONLY problem is lack of airflow — compressor runs and coils are cold

🔧 Common Symptoms
- Fresh food compartment is warm while freezer stays cold
- Excessive frost or ice buildup on freezer back wall or coils
- No airflow felt from vents inside the refrigerator
- Unusual noise (grinding, squealing) from the freezer compartment
- Refrigerator runs constantly but cannot maintain temperature
✔ If these symptoms match, this is the most likely failed component in the system.
✔ In most cases, replacing this evaporator fan motor restores normal cooling and airflow immediately.

While the freezer back panel is off, inspect the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Excessive frost buildup that caused the fan to fail is often a sign of a defrost system issue — if the defrost heater or thermostat is faulty, frost will return and damage the new fan motor. Addressing the defrost system at the same time prevents a repeat failure.
⚙️ Installation
Skill Level: Moderate — 30–45 minutes. Disconnect power before servicing. Remove all freezer contents and shelving, then remove the freezer back panel to access the evaporator assembly. Disconnect the fan motor wire connector, remove the mounting screws, and swap in the new motor. Reinstall the panel, restore power, and verify airflow from the refrigerator vents within a few minutes of startup.

💡 Pro Tip
If the evaporator coils are completely encased in ice, the fan motor may test fine once the ice is cleared — the ice block physically prevents the blade from spinning. Before replacing the motor, manually defrost the freezer for 24–48 hours with the power off and doors open. If the fan runs normally after defrost but frost returns within a week, the defrost heater or thermostat is the root cause, not the fan motor.
