  1. Unplug the dryer – Disconnect power from the outlet. For gas dryers, also turn off the gas supply valve.
  2. Pull dryer away from wall – Give yourself room to work behind the unit.
  3. Remove the back panel:Remove the screws securing the back panel of the dryer.Set the panel aside to expose the interior components.
  4. Locate the high limit thermostat:Find the heater housing/element assembly (electric dryers) or burner assembly area (gas dryers).The high limit thermostat is a small disc-shaped component mounted on or near the heater housing, typically with two wires attached.It may be near the thermal fuse and cycling thermostat — don't confuse them. The high limit thermostat is usually labeled or has a higher temperature rating.
  5. Identify and photograph wire connections – Document which wire connects to which terminal before disconnecting.
  6. Test the thermostat (optional but recommended):Use a multimeter set to continuity or ohms.At room temperature, a good high limit thermostat should show continuity (closed circuit) — near 0 ohms.If it shows no continuity (open circuit / OL), the thermostat has failed in the open position and needs replacement.
  7. Disconnect the wires:Pull the spade connectors straight off the thermostat terminals.Grip the connectors, not the wires.
  8. Remove the thermostat:Remove the mounting screw(s) securing the thermostat to the heater housing.Remove the old thermostat.

  12. Reinstall the back panel – Replace the back panel and secure with screws.
  13. Restore power (and gas) – Plug in the dryer and turn on gas supply if applicable.
  14. Test operation:Run the dryer on a heat cycle.Verify the dryer heats consistently throughout the cycle.Check that the dryer doesn't overheat or shut off unexpectedly.Feel the exhaust air at the outside vent — it should be warm and have strong airflow.

The high limit thermostat almost never fails on its own — there's usually an underlying cause. The #1 reason this thermostat fails is a clogged or restricted dryer vent. When airflow is blocked, heat builds up in the heater housing, causing the high limit thermostat to trip repeatedly. This constant cycling eventually wears out the bi-metal disc, and the thermostat either fails open (no heat) or fails to protect properly (allowing overheating). Before installing a new thermostat, ALWAYS clean the entire vent system — lint trap, lint trap housing, internal ductwork, and the external vent duct to the outside. Use a vent brush or vacuum to remove all lint buildup. If you skip this step, the new thermostat will likely fail again within months. Also check that the outside vent hood flap opens freely when the dryer runs. To test the thermostat: at room temperature, it should show continuity (0 ohms). If it shows open (OL), it's failed. Note: the high limit thermostat is different from the thermal fuse — the thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that doesn't reset, while the high limit thermostat is designed to reset automatically. If your thermal fuse keeps blowing, the high limit thermostat may not be functioning properly, or there's a severe vent restriction.

The high limit thermostat (like the WP3390291) is a resettable bi-metal switch — when the temperature gets too high, it opens the circuit to cut power to the heater, but once the temperature drops, it automatically resets and allows heating to resume. It's designed to cycle as needed during normal operation if temperatures spike. The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device — when it blows due to excessive heat, it permanently breaks the circuit and must be replaced. It's the last line of defense and only activates if the high limit thermostat fails to control the temperature. If your dryer has no heat, test both components: the high limit thermostat should show continuity at room temperature (if it doesn't, it's failed open); the thermal fuse should also show continuity (if it doesn't, it's blown). Both components failing often indicates a clogged vent that caused severe overheating — always clean the vent system when replacing either part.
