Is This the Part You Need?
The dryer timer controls the duration and sequencing of every cycle — it advances through heat, tumble, and cool-down phases and shuts the dryer off at the end of the cycle. When the timer motor burns out, the cam contacts wear through, or the timer shaft breaks, the dryer may refuse to start, stop before the cycle completes, run the knob through positions without advancing the cycle, or run continuously without ever shutting off. Before ordering the timer, rule out the door switch and thermal fuse first — both are cheaper parts that cause identical symptoms and fail far more often. If both check out, the WPW10186032 is the genuine OEM Whirlpool replacement that restores full cycle control.
Symptoms This Part Fixes
- Dryer won’t start — pressing Start does nothing
- Dryer starts but stops before the cycle completes
- Timer knob turns but cycle won’t advance through settings
- Dryer runs continuously without shutting off automatically
- Dryer heats but drum doesn’t tumble, or tumbles but doesn’t heat
- Cycle completes too quickly or takes far longer than the selected time

The thermal fuse and door switch cause identical symptoms to a failed timer — dryer won’t start, stops mid-cycle — and both cost a fraction of the timer. Test the thermal fuse first with a multimeter: no continuity = blown fuse, replace it before ordering the timer. Then test the door switch: press the lever and check for continuity — no continuity when pressed = failed switch. If both pass, the timer is the correct diagnosis. Also check the timer motor specifically: disconnect the timer and apply power directly to the motor terminals — if the motor doesn’t run, the timer is confirmed faulty. Replacing the timer when the thermal fuse is the actual fault is the most common misdiagnosis on these dryers.
