How do I know if my oven bake element is bad?

There are several easy ways to tell if your bake element has failed:

Visual inspection (easiest): Open the oven door and look at the bake element on the bottom of the oven. Look for any visible damage — a hole, blister, burn spot, crack, split in the metal sheath, or an area that looks different from the rest of the element. A burned-through element almost always leaves a visible mark. If you see damage, the element is confirmed bad.

The glow test: Set the oven to bake at 400°F and watch the element through the oven window (or carefully open the door briefly). A working element should glow red evenly across its entire length within 3–5 minutes. If it doesn't glow at all, it's burned out. If it glows in some spots but not others, it has a partial break and is failing.

The broil test: If the oven heats on broil (the upper element glows red) but not on bake, the bake element is almost certainly the problem. The broil and bake elements are independent — if one works and the other doesn't, the non-working element has failed.

Multimeter test (definitive): Disconnect power. Remove one wire from the element. Set your multimeter to resistance. Touch the probes to the two element terminals. A good element reads 20–50 ohms. OL (no reading) means the element is burned out. This is the definitive test.

The breaker test: If the oven trips the circuit breaker when you turn on bake, the element may be shorted to ground. This is a more serious failure that requires immediate replacement — don't keep resetting the breaker and trying again.
