Common Symptoms
- Progressive loss of cooling caused by evaporator-coil icing
- Reduced airflow from the evaporator area because frost blocks the coil or air passages
- Defrost heater not operating when the thermostat should be closed
- Recurring frost buildup after temporary manual defrosting
Check Before Replacing
- Disconnect electrical power before testing or accessing the part.
- Inspect the evaporator area for abnormal frost buildup, while recognizing that icing can also result from other defrost-system or airflow faults.
- With the thermostat removed from the circuit and sufficiently cold, use a multimeter to check continuity; it should normally be closed at freezer temperature.
- Warm the thermostat and recheck continuity; it should open as temperature rises. Use the appliance-specific tech sheet for exact temperature specifications when available.
- Check the defrost heater and control circuit separately rather than concluding that the thermostat is defective from an icing symptom alone.
Pro Tip
A cold defrost bimetal that has no continuity is a strong indication of a failed thermostat, but a continuity result should be interpreted together with the heater, wiring, and defrost-control checks.

Part NumberWPW10392132
Part TypeDefrost Thermostat
ManufacturerWhirlpool
Appliance TypeRefrigerator
Primary FunctionTemperature-actuated safety switch in the refrigerator defrost circuit. It closes when cold to permit the defrost circuit to operate and opens as temperature rises to limit defrost heating and help prevent evaporator-coil overheating.
Installation Notes
- Disconnect refrigerator power before installation.
- Access and part location vary by refrigerator model; follow the model-specific service information.
- Reconnect wires exactly as originally arranged and ensure the thermostat is secured in its original position on or near the evaporator assembly.
- Do not substitute a generic thermostat unless its electrical and temperature specifications are confirmed for the appliance.
- Restore covers and wiring protection before reconnecting power.
