The essential fix for a Whirlpool gas range with burners that won't light, have weak or uneven flames, won't turn off completely, make a hissing sound when off, or have a gas smell indicating a leak.
The gas valve is the critical safety component that controls gas flow to all burners on your range. It regulates pressure and distributes gas to each burner based on the control knob settings. When you turn a burner knob, the valve opens to allow gas flow; when you turn it off, the valve closes to stop gas flow.
Common symptoms: burners won't light or ignite, weak or yellow flames instead of strong blue flames, burners won't turn off completely, hissing sound when burners are off, gas smell near range, uneven flame patterns, one or more burners not working.
Why it fails: Over 10–15 years, the internal valve mechanism wears out from constant opening and closing, seals deteriorate causing gas leaks, the pressure regulator fails resulting in weak flames, or debris clogs the gas ports. A failed gas valve is a serious safety hazard — it can cause gas leaks, carbon monoxide buildup from incomplete combustion, or burners that won't shut off creating a fire risk.
How to diagnose: If you smell gas when burners are off, burners won't light even though the igniter clicks, flames are weak or yellow, or burners won't turn off when the knob is turned to off — the gas valve has failed and must be replaced immediately.
