Range Burner Won't Heat or Won't Turn Off? Infinite Control Switch WS01F01598 – Fix Burner Temperature Control Fast

If your GE electric range burner won't heat, is stuck on high, or won't turn off, the infinite control switch has failed. In most GE and Hotpoint electric ranges, this is caused by a failed infinite control switch. When it fails, you lose all burner temperature regulation — the most dangerous failure mode is welded contacts that leave the burner locked on high heat, creating a fire and burn hazard. ⚡ Common failure point in GE-built electric ranges. Part WS01F01598 is the genuine OEM replacement that restores full burner temperature control immediately.

❓ Is This the Right Part?

This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:

  • ✔ Range powers on and other burners work normally
  • ✔ Oven and clock functions work correctly
  • ✔ Electrical supply to the range is confirmed OK
  • ✔ The burner element itself is not visibly burned out
  • ✔ ONLY problem is the affected burner won't heat, won't adjust, or won't turn off

Not sure? Send us your model number — we'll confirm before you order.

🔧 Common Symptoms

  • Burner won't heat at all when turned on — most common, what customers search
  • Burner stuck on high heat and won't turn off
  • No temperature control — only full blast or nothing
  • Burner heats intermittently or cycles erratically
  • Knob turns but heat level doesn't change
  • Burner indicator light stays on when element is off

✔ If these symptoms match, this is the most likely failed component in the system.

✔ In most cases, replacing this infinite control switch restores normal operation immediately.

📦 Part Details

  • Part Number: WS01F01598
  • Type: Infinite Control Switch (Burner Temperature Control)
  • Replaces: OEM direct-fit infinite switch assembly — supersedes WB23M111, WB24T10153, WB27T10384, 229C4709P006 (no modification required)
  • Brands: GE, Hotpoint, Crosley
⚠️ Recommended While Repairing:
If the burner was stuck on high before failure, inspect the surface element for heat damage — a burned-out element will need replacement alongside the switch. Replacing both at the same time saves a second disassembly of the control panel.

⚙️ Installation

Skill Level: MODERATE — 20–30 minutes. Disconnect power at the breaker before starting — NEVER work on a live range. Remove burner knobs, tilt the control panel forward, photograph all wiring before disconnecting, swap the switch, reconnect exactly as photographed, and restore power. Test all heat settings from low to high before considering the repair complete.

💡 Pro Tip

Match the Switch Rating to Your Burner Wattage:
Infinite switches are not universally interchangeable between burner positions — small and large burners may use different wattage elements requiring different switch ratings. Confirm the part number on your existing switch matches WS01F01598 before ordering. If your range has both 6-inch and 8-inch burners, the switches behind each may be different part numbers even on the same model.

My burner won't turn off — is this dangerous?

Yes — a burner that won't turn off is a safety emergency.

This means the infinite switch contacts have welded shut. The element is receiving continuous full power regardless of the knob position, including the "Off" position. This is dangerous for several reasons:You cannot control the heat output, so the element runs at maximum temperature continuously. This creates a fire risk if anything flammable is placed on or near the burner. It creates a burn risk for anyone who touches the element or cookware. It can overheat the cooktop surface and damage surrounding components. If left unattended, the element running at full power indefinitely can cause the element itself to fail catastrophically.

What to do immediately: Go to your electrical panel and turn off the circuit breaker for the range. This is the only way to cut power to the welded switch. Do not rely on the knob — it cannot override welded contacts. Do not use any burners on the range until the faulty switch is replaced, because you need the breaker on to use the other burners, which would also power the welded switch.

What caused it: Over time, the electrical contacts inside the switch experience arcing — small sparks each time the contacts open and close during normal cycling. This arcing gradually erodes and pits the contact surfaces. Eventually, a strong arc can fuse (weld) the contacts together permanently, creating a closed circuit that cannot be opened by the knob mechanism.

The fix: Replace the infinite switch. This is the only repair — welded contacts cannot be "unwelded." The switch must be replaced with the correct part for your burner size. After replacing the switch, also inspect the element and wiring for any heat damage caused by the prolonged uncontrolled operation.
