Difficulty Rating: Easy (1.5/5) — One of the simpler washer repairs. Requires disconnecting power, removing the old lid from the hinges (clips, pins, or screws), installing the new lid, and verifying alignment and lid lock operation. The main challenge is the weight and awkwardness of the glass lid — a helper makes this much easier. No plumbing, no complex wiring, no disassembly of the washer cabinet.

  • Washer glass lid cracked — visible crack across the glass
  • Washer glass shattered — glass broken into pieces
  • Lid frame cracked — plastic housing broken around hinges or edges
  • Lid won't close properly — doesn't sit flush on the washer
  • Lid won't stay closed — pops open or won't latch
  • Lid lock won't engage — striker on lid is broken or misaligned
  • Lid lock error code displayed (dL, LE, lid lock light flashing) due to damaged lid
  • Washer won't start because lid can't close and lock
  • Water splashing out during wash or spin cycle
  • Lid hinge mounting points broken — lid wobbles or detaches
  • Lid glass foggy or discolored (cosmetic replacement)
  • Lid makes rattling noise during spin — loose or cracked frame
  • Sharp glass edges — safety hazard from cracked tempered glass
  • Lid doesn't align with washer top panel — warped frame
  • Lid striker worn down — lock can't grab it
  • Cosmetic damage — scratched or chipped glass affecting appearance

Tempered glass lids can crack from thermal shock — not just impact. While most cracked lids result from something being dropped on them or the lid being slammed, tempered glass can also crack from rapid temperature changes. For example, placing a cold wet item on a lid that's been warmed by a hot wash cycle, or exposing the lid to a blast of cold air (near an exterior door in winter) while the washer is running a hot cycle. To extend the life of your new glass lid: avoid placing anything on top of the lid during operation, don't slam the lid closed (use the slow-close feature if equipped), and keep heavy objects away from the washer top. If your washer won't start after installing the new lid: the most common cause is the lid lock striker not aligning with the lock mechanism. Close the lid slowly and watch the striker enter the lock bezel — it should slide in smoothly and center. If it's off to one side, the hinges may need adjustment. Also verify the lid lock bezel on the washer top panel isn't cracked (see part WW01F01763 for the bezel). Hinge springs and dampers: while you have the old lid off, inspect the hinge springs and slow-close dampers. If the old lid was slamming shut (damper failed) or wouldn't stay open (spring broken), replace those components now — they're inexpensive and easy to access with the lid removed. Installing a new glass lid on worn hinges is like putting new tires on a car with bad shocks — the lid will work but won't feel right. Glass care: clean the tempered glass with standard glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrub pads that can scratch the surface. Minor scratches won't affect strength but will reduce visibility.

WW01L01524 GE Washer Glass Lid Assembly – Fix Your Washer With a Cracked Lid, Shattered Glass, Broken Hinges, or Lid That Won't Close Properly

WW01L01524 Washer Glass Lid Assembly – The complete replacement for a GE top-load washer with a cracked, shattered, or broken glass lid, a lid that won't close properly, broken hinge mounting points, a damaged lid striker that prevents the lid lock from engaging, or a lid frame that's warped or cracked. The glass lid assembly is the entire hinged top cover of your washer — it includes the tempered glass window, plastic frame, and lid lock striker. The tempered glass allows you to see inside the washer during operation without opening the lid and interrupting the cycle. Over time, the glass can crack from impact (dropping something on it, a heavy item falling), thermal stress, or manufacturing defects. The plastic frame can crack around the hinge mounting points from repeated opening and closing, or warp from heat exposure. A damaged lid creates safety hazards — sharp glass edges can cause cuts, water can splash out during operation, and if the lid can't close fully or the striker can't engage the lid lock, the washer won't start at all (lid lock error). This genuine OEM GE part is the complete lid assembly — glass, frame, and striker pre-assembled and ready to install. No need to source individual components. Fits GE and Hotpoint top-load washers. Easy 15–25 minute DIY repair that restores safe operation and full washer functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use my washer if the glass lid is cracked but not shattered?

We strongly recommend replacing a cracked glass lid before continuing to use the washer.

Here's why: Safety risks:

  • Even a small crack in tempered glass compromises its structural integrity. Tempered glass is designed to be strong as a complete unit — once cracked, it can shatter unexpectedly from vibration during the spin cycle, temperature changes, or even just closing the lid.
  • When tempered glass shatters,
