Diagnose the cause and find the right replacement part — fast shipping across Canada and the USA
A squealing, squeaking, or screeching dryer is one of the most common appliance complaints — and one of the easiest to fix. The noise almost always comes from a worn drive belt, a failing idler pulley, or worn drum support rollers. Left unaddressed, a squealing dryer will eventually stop tumbling entirely. This guide helps you pinpoint the exact cause and get the right part the first time.
Start the dryer and listen carefully. A high-pitched squeal that starts immediately and stays constant usually points to the idler pulley or drive belt. A rhythmic squeaking that pulses with drum rotation is typically worn drum rollers. A squeal that gets worse as the dryer heats up often indicates a belt that's glazing from heat. If the squeal recently turned into the drum not spinning at all, the belt has likely snapped.
The drive belt wraps around the drum and motor pulley. Over years of heat cycling, the rubber hardens, glazes, or develops cracks — causing it to slip against the drum surface and produce a high-pitched squeal. A slipping belt is a warning sign: if ignored, it will snap and the drum will stop spinning entirely.
How to confirm: Open the cabinet and inspect the belt for glazing (shiny surface), cracks, fraying, or thinning. A healthy belt is pliable and matte on the ribbed side.

How to confirm: With the cabinet open, spin the idler pulley by hand. It should spin smoothly and silently. Any roughness, wobble, or grinding means the bearing is worn.

When the roller bearings wear out, they produce a rhythmic squeaking or thumping that pulses in time with the drum's rotation. This is distinct from the constant squeal of a belt or pulley issue.
How to confirm: Remove the belt and spin the drum by hand. If you hear or feel a rhythmic drag or squeak, the rollers need replacement. Rollers should always be replaced as a set.

How to confirm: Inspect the front drum seal area for worn or missing plastic glides. Check the rear bearing for wear or dryness.

Many technicians replace all three in a single repair to avoid a callback — and it's the same labour either way since the cabinet is already open.

Is it safe to keep using a squealing dryer? Short-term, yes — but a squealing belt or pulley will fail soon. Running the dryer until the belt snaps risks the drum stopping mid-cycle with wet clothes inside. Fix it before it gets worse.
How long does a dryer belt last? Typically 8–12 years. Overloading, very long cycles, or a worn idler pulley accelerates belt wear significantly.
Will replacing the belt fix the squeal? If the belt is the source, yes — immediately. If the squeal continues after a new belt, the idler pulley or drum rollers are the next suspects. Contact us and we'll help diagnose.
