CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: This repair involves working inside the dryer with electrical components and high-temperature surfaces. Always unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet before beginning work to prevent electrical shock and accidental motor startup. If uncomfortable with this repair, hire a qualified technician.TOOLS REQUIRED: Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, nut driver or socket set (typically 1/4-inch or 5/16-inch), flashlight, work gloves, towels for cleaning, belt routing diagram (if available).IMPORTANT: This belt is 89-1/2 inches long with 4 ribs and 3 grooves. Verify your dryer model uses this belt length and rib configuration before ordering.

  1. Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet to ensure complete power disconnection. CRITICAL: Never work on the dryer while it's plugged in.
  2. Remove all items from the dryer drum and lint trap.
  3. Move the dryer away from the wall to provide working space and access to the rear panel (if necessary).
  4. Allow the dryer to cool completely if it has been used recently. The drum and internal components reach high temperatures (up to 180°F) and require at least 30-60 minutes to cool to safe handling temperatures.
  5. Remove the lint trap and lint trap housing (if accessible from the front) to provide access to the drum area.
  6. Remove the front panel or access cover of the dryer. Most GE dryers have a removable front panel secured with screws or clips. Consult your dryer's manual for specific removal instructions.
  7. Take multiple photos of the belt routing, idler pulley position, motor pulley location, and drum assembly before disassembly. CRITICAL: Belt routing must be exact for proper reassembly and dryer operation.
  8. Locate the idler pulley inside the dryer. The idler pulley is typically mounted on a spring-loaded arm that maintains belt tension. It's usually located near the drum, typically on the lower left or right side.
  9. Locate the motor pulley (typically 2-3 inches in diameter) on the motor shaft. The motor is usually located at the bottom or rear of the dryer.
  10. Locate the drum and identify the belt path around it. The belt wraps approximately 270-300 degrees around the drum, typically on the underside.
  11. Take detailed close-up photos of: belt routing around drum, idler pulley position and spring attachment, motor pulley position, belt path under idler pulley, and any belt guides or clips.
  12. Release the idler pulley tension by pushing the idler pulley arm inward or releasing the spring (varies by model). This removes tension from the belt, allowing it to be removed.
  13. Remove the old belt by carefully pulling it off the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley. Caution: The belt may be hot or have sharp edges—handle carefully.
  14. Inspect the old belt for damage indicators: visible cracks or fraying (wear), hardened or brittle rubber (thermal degradation), thinned areas (wear from friction), broken ribs (mechanical damage), or discoloration (overheating). This confirms the diagnosis.
  15. Inspect the idler pulley for wear: the pulley should spin freely when rotated by hand. If it doesn't spin, is cracked, or has a flat spot, it should be replaced. A worn idler pulley causes rapid belt wear and slippage.
  16. Inspect the motor pulley for wear: the pulley grooves should be smooth and uniform. If grooves are worn, cracked, or have flat spots, the pulley should be replaced.
  17. Inspect the drum rollers or felt seal (if accessible) for wear or damage. Worn rollers cause the drum to rub on the housing, damaging the new belt.
  18. Clean the belt path inside the dryer, removing lint, debris, and dust. Use a flashlight to inspect for lint buildup around the drum and pulleys.
  19. Unpack the new WW02F00854 belt from its packaging.
  20. Compare the new belt to the old one to verify length (89-1/2 inches), rib configuration (4 ribs, 3 grooves), width, and overall design match.
  21. Inspect the new belt for any shipping damage before installation. The belt should be flexible with no cracks, fraying, or damage.
  22. Route the new belt around the drum, following your detailed photos exactly. The belt typically wraps under the drum, with approximately 270-300 degrees of contact.
  23. Position the belt under the idler pulley, ensuring it sits properly in the pulley grooves.
  24. Position the belt on the motor pulley, ensuring it sits properly in the pulley grooves.
  25. Verify the belt is properly routed by checking against your detailed photos. The belt path should match the old belt exactly.
  26. Release the idler pulley tension (if it was held) to allow the spring-loaded arm to engage and tension the belt. The idler pulley should apply firm pressure to the belt.
  27. Verify proper belt tension by attempting to move the belt with your finger at the point of maximum span (typically on top of the drum). The belt should move approximately 1/2 inch with moderate finger pressure. If it moves more than 1 inch, tension is too loose. If it doesn't move at all, tension is too tight.
  28. Rotate the drum by hand to verify the belt drives smoothly without slipping. The drum should rotate freely with consistent resistance.
  29. Reinstall any belt guides or clips that were removed during disassembly.
  30. Reinstall the front panel or access cover by positioning it and securing with screws or clips.
  31. Reinstall the lint trap and lint trap housing.
  32. Restore electrical power by plugging in the dryer.
  33. Run a test cycle to verify proper belt operation:Set the dryer to air dry or low heat for 5-10 minutesListen for smooth, quiet operation—should not hear squealing, squeaking, or grindingFeel the dryer exterior for excessive heat or vibrationAfter 5 minutes, stop the dryer and check if the drum rotated (open door and verify drum position changed)
  34. Listen for any unusual sounds during the test cycle—squealing (belt slipping), squeaking (worn pulley), or grinding (drum rubbing) indicate problems.
  35. Check for proper drum rotation by stopping the dryer mid-cycle and manually rotating the drum. Should rotate smoothly with consistent resistance.
  36. Run a full drying cycle with a small load of damp towels to verify proper operation over an extended period.
  37. Monitor for proper performance during the full cycle: consistent drum rotation, no unusual sounds, no burning smell, and proper heat generation.
  38. If the dryer operates smoothly with quiet operation, consistent drum rotation, and proper drying performance, the repair is complete.

Safety Notes: Always unplug the dryer before working inside. Allow adequate cooling time before beginning work. Handle the old belt carefully—may have sharp edges. Verify belt routing matches your detailed photos exactly. Check idler pulley and motor pulley for wear—may need replacement if damaged. Test operation thoroughly before considering the repair complete. This repair requires moderate mechanical skills and typically takes 45-75 minutes for DIY.

  1. The WW02F00854 is 89-1/2 inches long with 4 ribs and 3 grooves—do not confuse it with other GE dryer belts that may be different lengths or rib configurations. GE manufactures several different dryer belts for different models, ranging from 85 inches to 95 inches in length. Installing the wrong length belt causes improper tension, slippage, or inability to route correctly around the pulleys. Always verify your dryer model's belt length and rib configuration before ordering. The 89-1/2 inch, 4-rib, 3-groove design is specific to certain GE dryer models—verify compatibility.
  2. A squealing or squeaking dryer indicates the belt is slipping on the motor pulley or idler pulley, not necessarily that the belt is broken. Belt slippage causes the belt to rub against the pulley grooves, creating friction and heat. Common causes of slippage include: worn idler pulley (not maintaining proper tension), worn motor pulley (grooves worn smooth), improper belt routing (belt not seated in grooves), or belt stretching from age (belt no longer grips properly). If your dryer squeals, inspect the idler and motor pulleys before replacing the belt. A new belt installed on worn pulleys will squeal again within weeks.
  3. The idler pulley is critical for proper belt tension and must be inspected during belt replacement. The idler pulley is spring-loaded and maintains constant pressure on the belt, compensating for minor belt stretch. If the idler pulley is worn (doesn't spin freely, has flat spots, or is cracked), it cannot maintain proper tension and the new belt will slip. Many technicians replace the idler pulley at the same time as the belt for best results. If your dryer has been squealing or the belt has worn prematurely, the idler pulley likely needs replacement.
  4. Proper belt routing is critical—the belt must wrap approximately 270-300 degrees around the drum, sit properly in the idler pulley grooves, and sit properly in the motor pulley grooves. Improper routing causes the belt to slip off pulleys, misalign, or wear prematurely. Always take detailed photos of the old belt routing before removal and follow those photos exactly when installing the new belt. If you're unsure of the routing, consult your dryer's service manual or watch a video tutorial for your specific model before beginning the repair.
  5. Belt tension should be approximately 1/2 inch of movement at the point of maximum span (typically on top of the drum) with moderate finger pressure. Too much tension (belt doesn't move) causes excessive wear on pulleys and bearings, shortening their lifespan. Too little tension (belt moves more than 1 inch) causes slippage and squealing. Proper tension is a balance—firm enough to prevent slippage but not so tight as to cause excessive wear. If you cannot achieve proper tension, the idler pulley may be worn and need replacement.
  6. Lint buildup inside the dryer accelerates belt wear by increasing friction and heat. If your dryer has been used for years without thorough internal cleaning, lint may have accumulated around the drum and pulleys. This lint increases friction, causing the belt to overheat and wear prematurely. When replacing the belt, thoroughly clean the interior of the dryer, removing all lint and debris. This extends the new belt's lifespan and improves dryer efficiency.
  7. A belt that breaks during operation (dryer stops mid-cycle) indicates excessive stress or a defective belt. If your old belt broke while the dryer was running, the cause may be: worn idler pulley causing excessive tension, worn motor pulley causing slippage and overheating, drum rollers worn causing the drum to rub and bind, or a defective belt with internal damage. Inspect all pulleys and drum rollers before installing the new belt. If the new belt breaks prematurely, the root cause (worn pulleys or rollers) must be addressed.
  8. The motor pulley grooves must be smooth and uniform for proper belt grip. If the motor pulley grooves are worn, cracked, or have flat spots, the belt cannot grip properly and will slip. Inspect the motor pulley carefully during belt replacement. If grooves are damaged, the motor pulley should be replaced. A new belt installed on a damaged motor pulley will slip and wear prematurely.
  9. Thermal degradation (belt hardening and cracking) is the most common cause of belt failure in dryers over 8 years old. The high temperatures inside the dryer (up to 180°F) cause the rubber compound to harden and lose elasticity over time. A hardened belt cracks easily, loses grip, and eventually breaks. If your dryer is over 8 years old and the belt is cracked or hardened, replacing the belt is the right solution. The improved rubber compound in the WW02F00854 is more heat-resistant than older belts and should last longer.
  10. Always allow the dryer to cool completely before beginning belt replacement—the drum and internal components can reach 180°F and cause burns. After the dryer is unplugged, wait at least 30-60 minutes before opening the dryer and beginning work. If you must work sooner, use work gloves and be very careful around the drum and pulleys. Never touch the drum or pulleys until you're certain they've cooled.
  11. The belt should be replaced as a complete unit—do not attempt to splice or repair a broken belt. Spliced or repaired belts are unsafe and will fail during operation. Always install a new, complete belt. Partial belt repairs may seem cost-effective but result in premature failure and potential safety hazards (broken belt can wrap around the motor or drum).
  12. After belt replacement, monitor the first few drying cycles carefully to verify proper operation. Listen for smooth, quiet operation without squealing or squeaking. The drum should rotate smoothly and consistently. If any problems occur (squealing, squeaking, grinding, or drum not rotating), immediately stop the dryer and diagnose the issue. Do not leave the dryer unattended during the first few cycles after belt replacement.

WW02F00854 Dryer Drive Belt 89-1/2 Inch

The WW02F00854 is a genuine OEM dryer drive belt designed for GE, Hotpoint, Kenmore, and related brand dryers. This critical component connects the dryer motor pulley to the dryer drum, transferring rotational power from the motor to spin the drum during drying cycles. The drive belt is essential for proper dryer function—without a functioning belt, the drum cannot rotate, preventing all drying operations and making the appliance unusable. The WW02F00854 is precisely engineered to 89-1/2 inches in length (approximately 227 cm), providing the exact circumference needed to wrap around the drum, under the idler pulley, and around the motor pulley in GE dryer configurations. The belt is constructed from premium materials including high-strength rubber compound (typically synthetic rubber or neoprene blend, rated for continuous operation at temperatures up to 180°F without degradation), reinforced fabric core (typically polyester or aramid fiber reinforcement embedded in the rubber, providing tensile strength and preventing stretching under load), 4-rib flat belt design with 3 grooves (the ribs engage with grooves on the motor pulley for positive grip and slip-free power transmission, while the flat side contacts the drum for smooth rotation), and heat-resistant construction (withstands the high temperatures generated by the dryer motor and drum friction without cracking, hardening, or losing elasticity). The 4-rib, 3-groove design is specific to GE dryers and provides superior grip compared to smooth belts, preventing slippage even under heavy loads or when starting a full drum. The WW02F00854 replaces older part numbers including WE03X29897, WE12M29, 254C1413P002, 4PH2275, SH210T, AP6797580, PS12720878, and similar belts and features improved rubber compound formulation for longer lifespan (30% longer than previous generation), enhanced rib design for better grip and reduced slippage, upgraded fabric reinforcement for higher tensile strength and resistance to stretching, improved heat resistance for better performance in high-temperature dryer environments, and optimized length and width for precise fit across all compatible GE dryer models. The dryer drive belt operates through friction and mechanical engagement: the belt wraps around the dryer drum (approximately 270-300 degrees of wrap), passes under the spring-loaded idler pulley (which maintains proper belt tension and prevents slippage), and wraps around the motor pulley (typically 2-3 inches in diameter); when the dryer is turned on, the motor rotates the motor pulley, which drives the belt; the belt transfers rotational power to the drum through friction on the flat side; the idler pulley maintains constant tension on the belt, compensating for minor belt stretch and ensuring consistent grip; the drum rotates at approximately 50-60 RPM during normal operation, tumbling clothes for even drying; the belt continuously flexes and bends around the pulleys and drum, requiring flexibility and durability to withstand millions of cycles over its lifespan. Common failure causes include normal wear from age and continuous operation (typical belt lifespan 5-10 years with average use), thermal degradation from high dryer temperatures causing rubber hardening and cracking, mechanical wear from friction against the drum and pulleys causing thinning and weakening, improper tension from worn idler pulley or motor mount causing slippage and accelerated wear, contamination from lint buildup or fabric softener residue reducing grip, overloading the dryer causing excessive stress and stretching, manufacturing defects, or premature failure from low-quality replacement belts. When the drive belt fails, symptoms include drum not rotating (motor runs but drum doesn't spin), loud squealing or squeaking noise from the dryer (belt slipping on pulleys), burning rubber smell (belt slipping and overheating), visible belt damage (cracks, fraying, or broken belt), intermittent drum rotation (belt slipping on and off), or complete dryer failure (broken belt prevents drum rotation). The WW02F00854 is a direct replacement belt that provides reliable, consistent drum rotation for efficient drying performance and long service life. IMPORTANT: This belt is 89-1/2 inches long with 4 ribs and 3 grooves. Verify your dryer model uses this belt length and rib configuration before ordering. CRITICAL: Always unplug the dryer before working on internal components to prevent electrical shock and accidental motor startup. This repair requires accessing the dryer drum and belt routing system—allow adequate time for disassembly and reassembly.
