If uncomfortable with this repair, hire a qualified technician.TOOLS REQUIRED: Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, nut driver or socket set (typically 1/4-inch or 5/16-inch), flashlight, work gloves, towels for cleaning, belt routing diagram (if available).IMPORTANT: This belt is 89-1/2 inches long with 4 ribs and 3 grooves. Verify your dryer model uses this belt length and rib configuration before ordering.

  1. Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet to ensure complete power disconnection. CRITICAL: Never work on the dryer while it's plugged in.
  2. Remove all items from the dryer drum and lint trap.
  3. Move the dryer away from the wall to provide working space and access to the rear panel (if necessary).
  4. Allow the dryer to cool completely if it has been used recently. The drum and internal components reach high temperatures (up to 180°F) and require at least 30-60 minutes to cool to safe handling temperatures.
  5. Remove the lint trap and lint trap housing (if accessible from the front) to provide access to the drum area.
  6. Remove the front panel or access cover of the dryer. Most GE dryers have a removable front panel secured with screws or clips. Consult your dryer's manual for specific removal instructions.
  7. Take multiple photos of the belt routing, idler pulley position, motor pulley location, and drum assembly before disassembly. CRITICAL: Belt routing must be exact for proper reassembly and dryer operation.
  8. Locate the idler pulley inside the dryer. The idler pulley is typically mounted on a spring-loaded arm that maintains belt tension. It's usually located near the drum, typically on the lower left or right side.
  9. Locate the motor pulley (typically 2-3 inches in diameter) on the motor shaft. The motor is usually located at the bottom or rear of the dryer.
  10. Locate the drum and identify the belt path around it. The belt wraps approximately 270-300 degrees around the drum, typically on the underside.
  11. Take detailed close-up photos of: belt routing around drum, idler pulley position and spring attachment, motor pulley position, belt path under idler pulley, and any belt guides or clips.
  12. Release the idler pulley tension by pushing the idler pulley arm inward or releasing the spring (varies by model). This removes tension from the belt, allowing it to be removed.
  13. Remove the old belt by carefully pulling it off the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley. Caution: The belt may be hot or have sharp edges—handle carefully.
  14. Inspect the old belt for damage indicators: visible cracks or fraying (wear), hardened or brittle rubber (thermal degradation), thinned areas (wear from friction), broken ribs (mechanical damage), or discoloration (overheating). This confirms the diagnosis.
  15. Inspect the idler pulley for wear: the pulley should spin freely when rotated by hand. If it doesn't spin, is cracked, or has a flat spot, it should be replaced. A worn idler pulley causes rapid belt wear and slippage.
