The drum top bearing is the wear component that supports the front edge of the dryer drum as it rotates against the stationary front bulkhead. It provides a smooth, low-friction contact surface so the heavy drum — loaded with wet clothes — can glide quietly. Over time, the bearing wears down from constant friction and the weight of the drum. Once the bearing material is worn through, the metal drum contacts the metal bulkhead directly, producing loud squealing, scraping, or grinding noises that get progressively worse. A severely worn bearing also allows the drum to drop slightly or wobble, causing thumping sounds and uneven tumbling. Why is my dryer making a loud squealing noise?

A high-pitched squeal that lasts throughout the entire dryer cycle is almost always the drum top bearing or the drum support rollers. The drum top bearing supports the front edge of the drum against the front bulkhead — when it wears through, the metal drum grinds directly against the metal bulkhead, producing a loud squeal or scraping sound. To narrow it down, open the dryer door and spin the drum by hand. If you hear the squeal or feel scraping resistance at the front, the drum top bearing is worn. If the noise or roughness comes from the back, the rear support rollers are worn. In many cases, both the bearing and rollers are worn simultaneously since they age together. The belt and idler pulley can also squeal, but belt squeal is typically intermittent (at startup or under load), while bearing squeal is constant throughout the cycle. If the noise has been getting progressively louder over days or weeks, that's the classic pattern of a bearing wearing down gradually until it's metal-on-metal.
