A failed lid lock is the most common reason a Whirlpool top-load washer refuses to start, pauses mid-cycle, or displays a lid lock error code. In most Whirlpool top-load washers, the lid lock assembly contains a solenoid and switch that must signal the control board before any cycle can begin. When it fails, the washer either won’t start at all, stops mid-fill, or flashes an F5 E1 / LF error and locks up. ⚡ Common failure point in Whirlpool-built top-load washers. ✔ If these symptoms match, this is the most likely failed component in the system.
✔ In most cases, replacing this lid lock assembly restores normal operation immediately.
Skill Level: Easy — 15–20 minutes. Unplug the washer before beginning. The lid lock is mounted under the top panel near the lid hinge — release the top panel clips with a putty knife, tilt the panel back, disconnect the wiring harness from the old lock, remove the two mounting screws, and snap the new assembly into place. Reconnect the harness, lower the panel, and restore power. Run a short test cycle to confirm the lock engages and the error clears. Do not force the lid — if the lock doesn’t click, check harness seating before cycling power.
