If your GE dryer is making a loud squealing, grinding, or thumping noise during the drying cycle, a worn drum top bearing assembly is the most common cause. In most GE front-load dryers, the drum top bearing supports the front of the drum and allows it to rotate smoothly against the bulkhead. When the bearing wears out, the drum begins to wobble, rub against the cabinet, and produce progressively louder squealing or thumping sounds with every rotation. ⚡ Common wear item on GE front-load dryer platforms. Skill Level: Moderate — 45–60 minutes. Unplug the dryer before beginning. Remove the front panel and bulkhead to access the drum top bearing housing at the front of the drum. Unclip or unscrew the old bearing assembly, seat the new bearing into the housing, and reassemble the bulkhead and front panel. Rotate the drum by hand before closing to confirm smooth, even movement with no binding. Restore power and run a short cycle to verify noise is eliminated.
