Why won't my GE refrigerator cool even though the lights work?

When the interior lights work but the refrigerator doesn't cool, the control board or compressor starting components are the most likely culprits. The control board sends signals to start the compressor and run the fans. If the board's relays have failed, it can't activate the compressor even though it has power (which is why the lights work). First, listen for the compressor — if you hear clicking every few minutes but it doesn't run, the start relay may be bad (a cheaper fix). If there's no clicking at all and the fans aren't running either, the main control board has likely failed. Replacing the control board restores communication to all components and gets your refrigerator cooling again.
