GE Top-Load Washer Not Agitating or Leaving Clothes Dirty? Subwasher Kit WW01A00815 – Fix Weak Wash Action Fast
A GE top-load HE washer that runs a full cycle but leaves clothes dirty, barely moves laundry through the water, or makes grinding and scraping noises during the wash cycle is almost always a failed subwasher (washplate/impeller). In most GE, Hotpoint, and Haier top-load impeller-style washers, the subwasher is the low-profile disc at the bottom of the wash basket that oscillates to create the water movement and tumbling action that cleans clothes. When it fails — through cracked fins, a stripped drive hub, or physical damage to the plate — clothes sit in standing water with no movement, wash performance collapses, and clothes come out as dirty as they went in. ⚡ Common failure point in GE GTW-series and Hotpoint HTW-series top-load impeller washers. Part WW01A00815 is the genuine OEM GE subwasher kit that restores full wash action, correct tumbling, and consistent cleaning performance — superseding WW01A00736, WH43X25399, WH43X24848, and 233D2857G002.
❓ Is This the Right Part?
This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:
- ✔ Washer powers on, fills with water, and drains normally
- ✔ Drive motor runs — you can hear it operating during the wash cycle
- ✔ Drive belt and transmission confirmed intact — no slipping or grinding from the drive system
- ✔ Subwasher is visibly cracked, has broken fins, or spins freely on the drive shaft (stripped hub)
- ✔ ONLY problem is weak or no wash action, clothes not moving, or grinding noise from the wash basket
🔧 Common Symptoms
- Washer runs a full cycle but clothes come out still dirty or with detergent residue
- Clothes barely move during the wash cycle — no tumbling or water circulation visible
- Grinding, scraping, or clicking noise from the bottom of the wash basket during agitation
- Subwasher visibly cracked, warped, or has broken fins when inspected
- Subwasher spins freely on the drive shaft — hub is stripped and no longer engages
- Clothes tangled or unevenly washed — one side of the load cleans, the other doesn’t
✔ If these symptoms match, the subwasher is the most likely failed component in the system.
✔ In most cases, replacing this subwasher kit restores full wash action and cleaning performance immediately.

⚠️ Inspect the Drive Hub and Center Bolt While the Subwasher Is Out:
While the subwasher is removed, inspect the drive shaft splines and the center bolt for wear or stripping. A stripped drive shaft causes the new subwasher to spin freely without engaging — the same symptom as a failed subwasher. If the shaft splines are worn smooth, the transmission or drive shaft assembly will also need replacement. Catching this during the same service call saves a second disassembly.
⚙️ Installation Notes
Skill Level: MODERATE — 20–30 minutes. Unplug the washer before beginning any repair. Remove the fabric softener dispenser (if present) from the top of the agitator post, then use a socket wrench to remove the center bolt securing the subwasher to the drive shaft. Lift the old subwasher straight up and off the shaft, lower the new WW01A00815 onto the drive shaft aligning the splines carefully, reinstall and torque the center bolt securely, and run a test cycle to confirm proper wash action before returning to regular use.
💡 Pro Tip
Spline Alignment Is Critical — Don’t Force It:
When installing the new subwasher, lower it onto the drive shaft slowly and rotate it slightly until you feel the splines engage — the plate should drop into position with no resistance. If you force it down without proper spline alignment, you’ll strip the new hub immediately and the subwasher will spin freely from day one. Once seated correctly, the plate should have no lateral play and should not spin freely by hand. Torque the center bolt to spec — under-torquing allows the plate to work loose during operation.
