A top load washer that won’t start even when the lid is fully closed is often caused by a broken or missing door strike that fails to activate the door switch. In GE GTW680 series top load washers, the door strike attaches to the washer lid and physically depresses the door switch when the lid closes — without it, the washer’s safety circuit stays open and the machine won’t run. When the strike breaks or snaps off, the washer appears dead even though the control board and motor are fully functional. ⚡ Common failure point on GE top load washers — the plastic strike is vulnerable to impact and fatigue over time. Skill Level: EASY — 5–10 minutes. Disconnect power before servicing. The door strike clips or snaps onto the washer lid at the latch point. No tools required for most installations — align the strike with the mounting tabs and press firmly until it seats. Confirm the door switch activates when the lid is closed before restoring power.
