Whirlpool Washer Motor Humming But Not Spinning, Won’t Start, or Tripping the Breaker? The Run Capacitor Is the Most Common Cause.
The run capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to help the washer motor start and maintain speed through the wash and spin cycles. When it fails — from electrical stress, age, or heat exposure — the motor hums but the drum won’t turn, the washer won’t start at all, or the motor overheats and trips the breaker. The W11428524 is the OEM replacement run capacitor for compatible Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana top-load washers, directly replacing W10866238, W11162561, and W11175257.
Symptoms of a Failed Washer Run Capacitor
- Washer motor hums loudly but drum won’t spin or agitate
- Washer won’t start — no drum movement despite power and water fill
- Slow or weak spin cycle — clothes come out soaking wet
- Motor overheats and shuts off mid-cycle
- Washer trips the circuit breaker when starting
- Burning smell from the motor area
- Motor struggles to start then runs normally once spinning
- Inconsistent motor performance — works sometimes, fails other times
- Washer starts wash cycle but stalls when transitioning to spin

💡 Pro Tip — Test the Capacitor with a Multimeter Before Replacing the Motor:
A washer motor that hums but won’t spin is almost always a failed capacitor — not a failed motor. The motor itself is typically fine; it just can’t generate enough starting torque without a functioning capacitor. Before assuming the motor needs replacement (a much more expensive repair), test the capacitor with a multimeter set to capacitance mode. A good capacitor will read close to its rated value; a failed one will read near zero or open circuit. The capacitor costs a fraction of the motor and takes 15 minutes to replace. Always test the capacitor first on any washer that hums but won’t spin.
Installation Notes
-
Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate — requires cabinet access and capacitor terminal disconnection
- Unplug the washer before starting
- The run capacitor is typically located near the motor inside the washer cabinet — access by removing the front or rear panel depending on model
- Photograph the capacitor terminal connections before disconnecting
- Discharge the old capacitor before handling — capacitors can hold a charge even after the washer is unplugged; short the terminals briefly with an insulated screwdriver
- Note the capacitor’s mounting orientation and bracket position before removal
- Install the new W11428524 capacitor in the same position and reconnect terminals to their matching leads
- Restore power and run a full wash and spin cycle to confirm the motor starts cleanly and spins at full speed

New vs. Used — Which Option Is Right for You?
The New variant is a fresh OEM-spec run capacitor — recommended for any washer where the old capacitor showed signs of bulging, leaking, or burn damage. The Used variant is a Certified Pre-Owned capacitor pulled from a working unit and tested before sale. Both options ship from XPart Supply Ltd. in Canada.
