Whirlpool Washer Won’t Spin, Won’t Agitate, or Showing F7E1 / F7E5 Error? Shift Actuator W11481722 – Fix Mode Shift Failure Fast

A Whirlpool top-load washer that won’t spin, won’t agitate, makes a loud clicking or grinding noise during the cycle, or displays an F7E1 or F7E5 error code almost always has a failed shift actuator. In most Whirlpool, Maytag, and Amana top-load washers, the shift actuator is the synchronous motor-driven gear assembly that physically shifts the transmission between agitate and spin modes — when it fails, the washer cannot transition between wash and spin, and the control board detects the failure and throws an F7E1 or F7E5 fault. When it fails, the washer may stop mid-cycle, skip the spin entirely, or repeat the agitate cycle without advancing. ⚡ Shift actuator failure is the most common cause of F7E1 and F7E5 error codes on Whirlpool-platform top-load washers. Part W11481722 is the genuine OEM shift actuator that restores full agitate-to-spin mode shifting and clears the error code immediately.

❓ Is This the Right Part?

This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:

  • ✔ Your washer is a compatible Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Kenmore, Roper, or Crosley top-load model
  • ✔ The washer fills and begins the cycle normally
  • ✔ The washer displays F7E1 or F7E5 error code, or stops mid-cycle without completing spin
  • ✔ The lid lock and lid switch are functioning — lid lock light activates normally
  • ✔ ONLY problem is mode shift failure — not a control board, motor, or drive system fault

Not sure? Send us your model number — we’ll confirm before you order.

🔧 Common Symptoms

  • F7E1 or F7E5 error code displayed — most common, what customer Googles
  • Washer won’t spin — agitates but never transitions to spin cycle
  • Washer won’t agitate — fills but drum doesn’t move
  • Loud clicking or grinding noise during cycle — actuator gear slipping or stripped
  • Washer stops mid-cycle and won’t advance — stuck between modes
  • Cycle completes but clothes are soaking wet — spin mode never engaged

✔ If these symptoms match, this is the most likely failed component in the system.

✔ In most cases, replacing the shift actuator clears the error code and restores full agitate and spin operation immediately.

📦 Part Details

⚠️ Check the Lid Lock Assembly While You’re In There:
A failed lid lock can cause identical F7E1 symptoms and is often misdiagnosed as a shift actuator fault — confirm the lid lock activates and the lid lock light illuminates before ordering the actuator. If the lid lock tests good and the F7E1 persists, the shift actuator is the confirmed fault.

⚙️ Installation Notes

Skill Level: Easy to Moderate — 25–35 min DIY. Unplug the washer before beginning. Tilt the washer back or lay it on its front to access the actuator mounted to the bottom of the transmission. Disconnect the wire harness connector, remove the mounting screws, and swap in the new W11481722 actuator in the same orientation. Reconnect the harness, return the washer to upright, restore power, and run a diagnostic cycle to confirm the F7E1 error has cleared and both agitate and spin modes engage correctly.

💡 Pro Tip

Run Diagnostic Mode to Confirm the Actuator Before Ordering:
Whirlpool top-load washers have a built-in diagnostic mode that tests the shift actuator directly — enter diagnostic mode by rotating the cycle selector knob in a specific sequence (consult your model’s service manual) and the washer will attempt to shift modes and report the fault code. If the diagnostic confirms F7E1 with the lid lock passing, the shift actuator is the confirmed fault. Running diagnostics first eliminates the control board and lid lock as possible causes and ensures you order the correct part on the first attempt.

Why does my washer make a clicking noise and won't spin or agitate?

A clicking noise coming from underneath the washer, especially when it's trying to change between wash and spin cycles, is the telltale sign of a failing shift actuator. The actuator is a small motor that physically shifts the transmission between agitate mode and spin mode. When the actuator's internal gears wear out or the motor weakens, it clicks repeatedly as it tries (and fails) to shift the transmission. The washer may get stuck in one mode — agitating but not spinning, or vice versa — or it may not do either. The clicking sound is the actuator motor running but the gears slipping. Replacing the shift actuator restores the washer's ability to properly shift between modes and complete its cycles.
