⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Capacitors store electrical energy even when unplugged. Always discharge the capacitor before handling to avoid electrical shock.

  1. Unplug the washer – Disconnect power from the outlet. Wait at least 5 minutes for any residual charge to dissipate.
  2. Turn off water supply – Close both hot and cold water valves (optional but recommended).
  3. Access the capacitor:The capacitor is typically located near the drive motor at the bottom of the washer.Depending on your model, you may need to:Lay the washer on its back or side (protect the floor with cardboard or blankets), orRemove the rear access panel, orRemove the cabinet/housing to access the motor area.
  4. Locate the capacitor – Find the cylindrical capacitor mounted near the motor. It will have two wire terminals connected to it.
  5. Discharge the capacitor (CRITICAL):Use an insulated screwdriver to short across the two terminals, orUse a capacitor discharge tool or resistor. You may see/hear a small spark — this is normal and indicates the capacitor had stored charge.
  6. Take a photo – Document the wire connections before removing anything.
  7. Disconnect wires – Pull the spade connectors off the capacitor terminals. Note which wire goes to which terminal (though most start capacitors are non-polarized).
  8. Remove the capacitor:Release the mounting bracket, strap, or clip holding the capacitor in place.Remove the old capacitor from the washer.
  9. Verify replacement capacitor specs – Confirm the new W11395618 capacitor has the same microfarad (µF) rating and voltage rating as the original. Using an incorrect capacitor can damage the motor.
  10. Install the new capacitor:Mount the new capacitor in the bracket or strap.Secure the mounting hardware.
  11. Reconnect wires – Attach the wire connectors to the capacitor terminals. Ensure firm, secure connections.
  12. Reassemble the washer – Replace any panels or return the washer to upright position.
  13. Reconnect water supply – Turn on the water valves.
  14. Restore power – Plug the washer back in.
  15. Test operation:Run a wash cycle and listen for the motor to start promptly without humming or hesitation.Verify the motor runs smoothly through agitate and spin cycles.Check that the motor doesn't overheat or trip the thermal protector.

A humming motor that won't start is the classic symptom of a failed start capacitor — but verify before replacing. First, try spinning the wash basket by hand while the washer is trying to start. If the motor starts running after a manual push, the capacitor is almost certainly bad — it's not providing the starting boost, but the motor itself is fine. If the motor still won't run even with a manual start, the motor itself may be seized or have failed windings. You can test a capacitor with a multimeter that has a capacitance (µF) function — the reading should be within 10% of the rated value printed on the capacitor. A reading of zero, very low, or "OL" indicates a failed capacitor. Visually inspect the capacitor for bulging, leaking oil, burn marks, or a popped pressure relief vent — any of these indicate failure. When installing the new capacitor, ensure the mounting is secure — a loose capacitor can vibrate and fail prematurely. If the old capacitor failed due to motor problems (seized bearings, shorted windings), the new capacitor may fail quickly too — address any underlying motor issues.

W11395618 Whirlpool Washer Start Capacitor – Fix Your Washer That Won't Start, Hums But Won't Run, or Has a Motor That Struggles to Start2

W11395618 Washer Motor Start Capacitor – The complete fix for a Whirlpool top-load washer that won't start, hums or buzzes but won't run, has a motor that struggles to start, trips the breaker when starting, or intermittently fails to begin a cycle. The start capacitor is an electrical component that provides the initial boost of power needed to get the washer's drive motor spinning. Single-phase motors (like those in residential washers) cannot start on their own — they require a capacitor to create the phase shift that generates starting torque. When the capacitor fails — due to age, electrical stress, overheating, or internal breakdown — the motor can't start. You'll typically hear a humming or buzzing sound when the washer tries to start (the motor is energized but can't turn), and the motor may overheat and shut off on its thermal protector. If your washer fills with water but the motor won't start the agitate or spin cycle, or you hear humming without any drum movement, the start capacitor is a likely cause. This genuine OEM Whirlpool part directly replaces W10804665 and W10625044. Fits Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Roper, Crosley, Estate, and Kenmore top-load washers. Moderate 30–45 minute DIY repair that restores reliable motor starting.
