Why does my dishwasher fill with water but not wash the dishes?

If your dishwasher fills with water but the dishes come out dirty and you don't hear the normal whooshing sound of water spraying, the circulation pump has likely failed. The circulation pump draws water from the bottom of the tub and forces it through the spray arms at high pressure to clean the dishes. When the pump motor burns out, the impeller breaks, or the pump becomes clogged, water can't reach the spray arms. You may hear humming (motor trying to run but can't), grinding (damaged impeller), or nothing at all (motor completely dead). First, check that the spray arms aren't clogged and the filter screen is clean. If those are fine and there's still no water circulation, the pump and motor assembly needs replacement.
