Common Symptoms

  • Water appearing below or around the washer door during a cycle
  • Door difficult to close or lock when the gasket is damaged or misaligned
  • Musty or unpleasant odor associated with residue or moisture retained in the gasket folds
  • Visible tearing, cracking, deformation, or foreign objects lodged in the gasket

Check Before Replacing

  • With the washer empty and powered off, visually inspect the entire gasket—especially the lower folds—for tears, cracks, distortion, or separation.
  • Check the gasket-to-door contact area for hair, clothing, coins, or other foreign objects that could prevent a proper seal.
  • Confirm that the gasket is seated evenly around the opening and that no clothing is trapped between the door glass and gasket.
  • If there is no visible damage, clean and dry the gasket folds, then observe whether leakage continues during a supervised short cycle; do not assume the gasket is the cause because other washer components can also leak.

Pro Tip

After each load, wipe moisture and residue from the gasket folds and leave the washer door open to improve drying and reduce odor buildup.

Why does my front-load washer smell like mold or mildew?

The musty, moldy smell in front-load washers almost always comes from the door boot seal. The seal has folds and crevices where water, detergent residue, and debris collect after each wash. In the dark, damp environment inside a closed washer, mold and mildew thrive — growing on the rubber seal and producing that unpleasant odor. The smell can transfer to your clothes, making them smell musty even after washing. To eliminate the smell, you may need to replace the door boot seal if mold has penetrated the rubber or if the seal is damaged. However, if the mold is only on the surface, you can try cleaning it with a bleach solution or commercial washer cleaner. To prevent mold from returning: wipe the seal dry after every load, leave the door open between washes to allow air circulation, use only HE detergent in recommended amounts, and run a monthly cleaning cycle. If the seal has visible black mold that won't clean off, holes, tears, or has deteriorated — replacement is the best solution for eliminating odors permanently.
