Step-by-Step Installation:

1. Disconnect Power: Unplug the dryer or turn off the circuit breaker. For gas dryers, also shut off the gas supply valve.
2. Remove Lint Screen: Pull out the lint screen from the top of the dryer.
3. Remove Top Panel: Locate the two screws inside the lint screen housing (one on each side). Remove these screws. Insert a putty knife between the top and front panel near the corners to release the spring clips. Lift the top panel up and prop it open or remove it completely.
4. Disconnect Door Switch (if necessary): If removing the top panel completely, disconnect the door switch wire harness.
5. Remove Front Panel: Remove the screws securing the front panel to the dryer cabinet (typically 2-4 screws along the top edge under the top panel, and possibly screws at the bottom corners). Disconnect the door switch wire if not already done. Carefully lift the front panel up and off the dryer cabinet.
6. Support the Drum: With the front panel removed, the drum will want to fall forward. Have a helper support it, or carefully prop it with a towel or block.
7. Locate Bearing Slides: The bearing slides are mounted on the front bulkhead (the stationary front wall inside the cabinet). They are typically positioned at the 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 5 o'clock, and 7 o'clock positions around the drum opening (some models use only 2 slides at top positions).
8. Remove Old Slides: The slides are held in place by clips or tabs that snap into slots in the bulkhead. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old slides out of their mounting slots. Note the orientation and position of each slide.
9. Clean the Area: Use a vacuum to remove all lint buildup from the front bulkhead, drum rim, and surrounding areas. Wipe down the drum rim with a damp cloth to remove any residue or adhesive from the old felt pads.
10. Install New Slides: Position each new bearing slide with the felt pad facing inward (toward the drum). Align the mounting tabs with the slots in the front bulkhead. Press firmly until the slide snaps securely into place. Ensure each slide is fully seated and doesn't wobble.
11. Check Drum Rotation: Manually rotate the drum several full rotations to ensure it spins smoothly and quietly on the new bearing slides. Listen for any rubbing or binding sounds.
12. Reinstall Front Panel: Position the front panel back onto the cabinet, aligning the bottom edge first. Reconnect the door switch wire harness. Secure the front panel with the mounting screws.
13. Reinstall Top Panel: Lower the top panel back into position. Ensure the front clips engage properly. Replace the two screws inside the lint screen housing.
14. Replace Lint Screen: Insert the lint screen back into its housing.
15. Restore Power: Plug in the dryer or turn the circuit breaker back on. For gas dryers, turn the gas supply back on.
16. Test Operation: Run an empty cycle for 5-10 minutes on AIR FLUFF or LOW HEAT. Listen for smooth, quiet operation. The drum should rotate without squeaking, thumping, or grinding noises.

Always replace ALL bearing slides at once, not just the worn ones. Even if only one slide appears damaged, the others have experienced the same wear and will fail soon. Replacing all slides together ensures balanced drum support, eliminates return trips, and extends the overall lifespan of the repair. Most GE dryers use 4 slides; check your model's parts diagram to confirm the quantity needed.

Inspect the drum rim and rollers while you're in there. With the front panel off, this is the perfect time to check the rear drum support rollers (located at the back of the drum). If the rollers are worn, flat-spotted, or squeaking, replace them at the same time. Worn rollers cause the drum to sag forward, which accelerates bearing slide wear and creates a cycle of repeated failures.

Lint buildup is your enemy. Excessive lint accumulation on the bearing slides and drum rim causes premature wear and overheating. While you have the dryer open, vacuum out ALL lint from the cabinet interior, blower housing, and exhaust duct. A clean dryer runs quieter, more efficiently, and lasts longer.

Felt pad orientation matters. The felt side of the bearing slide MUST face the drum rim. Installing slides backwards (plastic against drum) will cause immediate loud grinding and rapid drum damage. Double-check orientation before snapping slides into place.

Break-in period: New bearing slides may produce a slight squeaking sound for the first 2-3 loads as the felt pads conform to the drum rim. This is normal and will disappear as the parts seat properly. If squeaking persists beyond 5 loads, recheck installation.

Prevent future failures: Clean your lint screen after every load and deep-clean the entire exhaust system annually. Restricted airflow causes the dryer to overheat, which hardens and cracks the bearing slide plastic and felt.
