  1. Turn off power to the range – Switch off the circuit breaker for the range (typically 40–50 amp double breaker). Verify power is off by confirming no burners, display, clock, or lights work.
  2. Pull range away from wall – Give yourself room to work behind and around the unit.
  3. Remove control knobs – Pull the control knobs straight off the shafts. Note which knob goes to which burner position for reinstallation.
  4. Remove the control panel back cover:Access the back of the control panel by removing screws from the rear panel at the top back of the range. Some models require lifting the cooktop first (release clips at front corners, prop up with support rod).On some models, the control panel tilts forward after removing mounting screws at the top.
  5. Locate the faulty infinite switch – Identify the switch that corresponds to the non-working burner. Switches are mounted behind the control panel with shafts extending through for the knobs.
  6. Take a photo of wiring – Document all wire connections to the switch before disconnecting. Label wires if helpful — this is critical for correct reinstallation.
  7. Disconnect wires from the switch – Pull the spade connectors straight off the switch terminals. Grip the connectors firmly, not the wires themselves. If connectors are melted, corroded, or damaged, they should be replaced with new crimp-on spade connectors.
  8. Remove the mounting bracket screws – Remove the screws (usually 2) securing the switch to the control panel mounting bracket.
  9. Remove the old switch – Slide or pull the failed infinite switch out of its mounting position.
  10. Compare old and new switches – Verify the new EBF62174906 switch has the same terminal configuration, shaft style, and mounting holes as the old one.
  11. Install the new switch:Position the new switch with the shaft extending through the control panel hole.Secure with mounting screws — do not overtighten.
  12. Reconnect wires – Attach each wire connector to the correct terminal on the new switch, matching your photo. Terminals are often labeled (H1, H2, L1, L2, P, N, or similar). Ensure firm, secure connections — loose connections cause arcing and premature failure.
  13. Inspect other connections – While the panel is open, check wire connections on adjacent switches for signs of heat damage, discoloration, or corrosion.
  14. Reassemble control panel – Replace the back cover and secure with screws. Lower cooktop if raised.
  15. Reinstall control knobs – Push the knobs onto the switch shafts, aligning the D-shape or splines correctly. Knobs should sit flush and turn smoothly.
  16. Restore power – Turn the circuit breaker back on.
  17. Test the burner:Turn the repaired burner to LOW — element should warm gradually and cycle on/off.Turn to MEDIUM — element should be hotter with longer on-cycles.Turn to HIGH — element should glow red/orange continuously.Verify indicator light illuminates when burner is on (if equipped).Turn OFF — element and indicator light should turn off completely within a few seconds.

Test the element before replacing the switch to avoid unnecessary work. Swap the suspect element with a known-working element from another burner position — if the element works in the other position, the element is good and the switch is bad. You can also test the element with a multimeter: it should read 20–50 ohms (varies by wattage). An open reading (infinite ohms) means the element is bad. When reconnecting wires, terminal identification is critical: H1/H2 typically connect to the heating element, L1/L2 connect to the 240V power supply lines, and P connects to the pilot/indicator light circuit. Incorrect wiring can result in no heat, constant full heat, or a non-functioning indicator light. If you find melted or discolored wire connectors, the connection was likely loose and arcing — cut back the damaged wire and crimp on a new spade connector for a reliable connection. Loose connections are a leading cause of switch failure, so ensure all connections are tight and fully seated. If the old switch shows burn marks or melted plastic around the terminals, inspect the corresponding wires carefully before connecting to the new switch.

EBF62174906 LG Range Rotary Switch – Fix Your Burner That Won't Heat, Won't Turn Off, Has No Temperature Control, or Only Works on High

EBF62174906 Range Surface Burner Infinite Switch – The complete fix for an LG electric range or cooktop burner that won't heat, won't turn off, only works on high, has no temperature control, heats intermittently, or has a burner indicator light that doesn't work. The infinite switch (also called surface burner switch, rotary switch, or simmerstat) is the component behind the control knob that regulates heat to the burner element. It works by cycling power on and off at varying intervals — when you turn the knob higher, the element stays on longer between cycles, producing more heat. When the infinite switch fails — due to worn contacts, a broken bimetal mechanism, burned terminals, or internal component failure — the burner may not heat at all, stay on constantly (won't turn off), only work at full power regardless of knob position, produce inconsistent heat, or the indicator light may not illuminate when the burner is on. If one burner isn't working properly but the element itself tests good, the infinite switch is the likely cause. This genuine OEM LG part directly replaces EBF62174901 and EBF62174904. Fits LG and Kenmore Elite electric ranges and cooktops. Moderate 30–45 minute DIY repair that restores precise burner temperature control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my electric range burner turn off?

A burner that won't turn off — staying on constantly even when the knob is set to OFF — indicates the infinite switch contacts have welded or fused together. Inside the infinite switch, electrical contacts open and close to cycle power to the element. Over time, these contacts can become pitted, corroded, or damaged from electrical arcing. In severe cases, the contacts weld together permanently, keeping the circuit closed and power flowing to the element continuously. This is a safety hazard — the element will stay hot indefinitely and could cause burns or fire. If your burner won't turn off, immediately turn off the circuit breaker to the range and replace the infinite switch before using that burner again. Do not attempt to use other burners until the faulty switch is replaced, as the issue could worsen. After installing the new switch, test that the burner turns off completely when the knob is in the OFF position.
