⚠️ Safety Note: Always disconnect power (and gas supply for gas dryers) before working on the dryer. This repair requires significant disassembly.

Tools Needed:

• Phillips screwdriver
• 1/4" nut driver or socket
• 5/16" nut driver or socket
• Flathead screwdriver
• Putty knife (for releasing top panel clips)
• Pliers
• Work gloves
• Vacuum cleaner (for lint cleanup)
• High-temperature bearing grease (if not included in kit)
• Smartphone or camera

Installation Steps:

Preparation:

1. Disconnect power – Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet. For gas dryers: also turn off the gas supply valve.
2. Pull the dryer away from the wall — give yourself room to work at the back.
3. Clean the lint trap and remove it from the dryer.

Remove the Top Panel:
4. Release the top panel clips:

• Insert a putty knife into the seam between the top panel and the front panel, approximately 2–3 inches from each corner.
• Push the putty knife in to release the spring clips.
• Lift the top panel up and lean it against the wall behind the dryer (or remove completely).

1. Some models use screws instead of clips — check for screws at the rear of the top panel.

Remove the Front Panel:
6. Disconnect the door switch wires:

• Locate the door switch connector inside the top of the cabinet.
• Unplug the wire connector.

1. Remove the front panel screws:Remove the screws at the top corners of the front panel (inside the cabinet, now visible with the top removed).Some models also have screws at the bottom.
2. Lift and remove the front panel:Lift the front panel up to release it from the bottom mounting tabs.Carefully set it aside — the front panel contains the drum glides and door switch.Note: The drum will now be unsupported at the front and may drop slightly.

Remove the Drum:
9. Release the drive belt:

• Reach under the drum and locate the drive belt on the idler pulley and motor pulley.
• Push the idler pulley to release belt tension.
• Slip the belt off the motor pulley.

1. Remove the drum:With the belt released, carefully lift the drum up and forward out of the dryer cabinet.The drum is bulky but not extremely heavy — a helper makes this easier.Set the drum on a blanket or towel to prevent scratching.The rear bearing area is now fully exposed on the rear bulkhead.

Remove the Old Bearing:
11. Locate the rear bearing:
- Look at the center of the rear bulkhead (the back wall inside the dryer cabinet).
- You'll see the bearing and retainer assembly — the drum shaft was riding in this bearing.
12. Inspect the old bearing:
- Look for wear marks, scoring, discoloration, melted plastic, or metal shavings.
- The bearing surface should be smooth — if it's rough, grooved, or has visible wear, it's confirmed bad.
13. Remove the old bearing retainer:
- The retainer is typically held by screws or clips on the rear bulkhead.
- Remove the screws or release the clips.
- Pull the retainer and old bearing out.
14. Clean the mounting area:
- Remove any old lubricant, debris, lint, or bearing material from the bulkhead.
- Clean the drum shaft/stem as well — it should be smooth and free of scoring.
- If the drum shaft is severely scored or grooved, it may need to be replaced (rare).
15. Inspect the rear bulkhead:
- Check for scoring or damage where the bearing sits.
- Minor surface wear is normal — deep grooves may require a bulkhead replacement or repair.Install the New Bearing:
16. Apply lubricant:
- If the kit includes a grease packet, apply a thin, even layer of high-temperature grease to the new bearing surface.
- If no grease is included, use high-temperature bearing grease (rated for 400°F+).
- Don't over-grease — a thin film is sufficient.
17. Install the new bearing into the retainer:
- If the bearing and retainer are separate pieces, seat the bearing into the retainer.
- Ensure it's fully seated and oriented correctly.
18. Mount the new bearing assembly on the rear bulkhead:
- Position the retainer and bearing on the bulkhead, aligning with the mounting holes.
- Install and tighten the mounting screws or snap the clips into place.
- The bearing should be centered and secure.
19. Install the felt seal (if included):
- Place the felt seal/gasket around the bearing or on the drum shaft area as directed.
- The felt seal prevents lint from entering the bearing.Reassemble the Dryer:
20. Also inspect and lubricate the drum shaft:
- Apply a thin layer of high-temperature grease to the drum shaft/stem that inserts into the bearing.
21. Reinstall the drum:
- Lift the drum and carefully slide it back into the cabinet.
- Guide the rear drum shaft into the new bearing — it should slide in smoothly.
- Seat the drum so the front rides on the front drum glides/rollers.
22. Reinstall the drive belt:
- Loop the belt around the drum (flat side against the drum).
- Thread the belt under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley in a zigzag pattern.
- The belt should be tight — the idler pulley provides tension.
23. Spin the drum by hand:
- Rotate the drum several times to verify smooth, quiet rotation.
- The drum should spin freely without grinding, catching, or squeaking.
- If you hear noise, verify the drum shaft is properly seated in the bearing.
24. Reinstall the front panel:
- Position the front panel on the bottom mounting tabs.
- Secure with screws at the top corners (and bottom if applicable).
- Reconnect the door switch wire connector.
25. Reinstall the top panel:
- Lower the top panel into position.
- Press down firmly at the front corners to engage the spring clips (or install rear screws).
26. Clean up:
- Vacuum any lint from inside the cabinet, around the motor, and in the blower housing.
- This is a great opportunity to clean areas normally inaccessible.Test the Repair:
27. Restore power (and gas supply for gas dryers).
28. Run the dryer empty:
- Start a timed dry cycle with no clothes.
- Listen carefully — the drum should rotate smoothly and quietly.
- No squeaking, squealing, grinding, or thumping.
29. Run with a load:
- Dry a normal load of laundry.
- Verify quiet operation under load.

30. Check for proper belt tracking:
- After the test run, briefly open the dryer and verify the belt is tracking straight on the drum — not riding to one side.

While you have the drum out, replace ALL wear components — not just the bearing. Removing the drum is the most labor-intensive part of any dryer repair, so it makes sense to replace every wear item while you have access. The components that wear together include: (1) Rear bearing (this part — you're already replacing it); (2) Front drum glides/slides — the Teflon or felt pads that the front of the drum rides on. If they're worn, the drum scrapes against the front bulkhead. They're inexpensive and take 2 minutes to replace with the drum out; (3) Drum support rollers (if your model has them) — rubber wheels that support the drum. Worn rollers cause rumbling or thumping; (4) Idler pulley — the spring-loaded pulley that tensions the drive belt. A worn idler pulley bearing causes a high-pitched whine. Replace it for $10
