Whirlpool HE Washer Leaving Clothes Dirty, Barely Moving, or Making Grinding Noises? Replace the Washplate W11510461
The washplate (also called the impeller) is the low-profile disc at the bottom of the wash basket on Whirlpool HE top-load washers. Its oscillating fins create the water circulation and tumbling action that cleans clothes. When the fins break, the drive hub strips, or the plate cracks, clothes barely move during the wash cycle, come out still dirty or tangled, and you may hear grinding or scraping noises as the damaged plate contacts the basket. The W11510461 is the OEM washplate for Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Roper, Crosley, and Kenmore HE top-load washers, directly replacing W11308900, W10752283, and W10610941.

Once the washplate is removed, inspect the drive hub splines on both the washplate and the basket hub shaft. Stripped splines are the most common reason a washplate fails — and if the basket hub shaft is also stripped, a new washplate alone won’t fix the problem. Spin the shaft by hand and check for wobble or play. If the shaft moves loosely, the basket hub assembly needs replacement at the same time. Catching this during the same repair saves your customer a second service call and another disassembly.
⚙️ Installation Notes
- Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate — basic tools required, 15–30 minute repair
- First Step: Unplug the washer before beginning any work
- Access: The washplate is accessed directly from inside the wash basket — no panel removal required on most models
- Removal: Remove the fabric softener dispenser (if present) from the centre of the washplate, then unscrew the centre bolt (typically 7/16” or T-20 Torx) and lift the washplate straight up
- Inspection: Check the drive hub splines and basket hub shaft for wear before installing the new washplate
- Installation: Align the new washplate over the drive hub, press down firmly until seated, and reinstall the centre bolt — do not overtighten
- After Install: Run a short wash cycle and confirm proper tumbling action before considering the repair complete

Why are my clothes not getting clean in my HE top-load washer?
High-efficiency (HE) top-load washers without a traditional agitator use a washplate (impeller) at the bottom of the basket to move clothes through the water. If the washplate fins are broken, worn down, or the drive hub is stripped, the washplate can't create proper water circulation — clothes barely move and don't get clean. You might also notice clothes coming out tangled, still stained, or smelling musty. Other signs of a failing washplate include grinding or scraping noises during the wash cycle, or the washplate spinning freely without resistance. Replacing the washplate restores the tumbling action needed for effective cleaning. Also make sure you're not overloading the washer — HE top-loaders need room for clothes to circulate freely.
