GE Washer Not Spinning or Agitating? Drive Belt WH01X24180 – Fix Belt Failure Fast

If your GE top-load washer’s motor runs but the tub doesn’t spin or agitate, or you hear a squealing or burning rubber smell during the wash cycle, the drive belt is the most likely cause. In most GE top-load washers, this is caused by a failed drive belt. When it breaks, the motor runs freely but no power reaches the transmission — the tub sits completely still. When it stretches or wears, it slips on the pulleys — producing a squealing noise and weak agitation or slow spin that leaves clothes soaking wet. ⚡ Common wear item in GE top-load washers — heat, friction, and constant flexing degrade the belt over 5–10 years of use. Part WH01X24180 is the genuine OEM replacement belt with the correct length, width, and rib profile that restores full power transfer to the transmission and clutch immediately.

❓ Is This the Right Part?

This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:

  • ✔ Washer powers on and motor runs — you can hear it operating during the cycle
  • ✔ Tub does not spin or agitate — or spins very slowly with weak agitation
  • ✔ Lid switch is functional — washer starts the cycle normally
  • ✔ Squealing, screeching, or burning rubber smell during wash or spin cycle
  • ✔ ONLY problem is no power transfer from motor to tub — not a lid switch, motor, or transmission issue

Not sure? Send us your model number — we’ll confirm before you order.

🔧 Common Symptoms

  • Motor runs but tub doesn’t spin or agitate — complete belt failure
  • Squealing or screeching noise during wash or spin cycle — belt slipping on pulleys
  • Weak agitation — agitator moves slowly or barely moves under load
  • Slow spin speed — clothes come out soaking wet after the spin cycle
  • Burning rubber smell during operation — belt slipping under friction
  • Visible cracking, fraying, or breakage on the belt surface

✔ If these symptoms match, the drive belt is the most likely failed component in the system.

✔ In most cases, replacing this drive belt restores full agitation and spin immediately.

⚙️ Installation Notes

Skill Level: EASY TO MODERATE — 20–30 minutes. Disconnect power before servicing. Lay the washer on its front or side to access the motor and pulley assembly at the bottom of the cabinet. Route the new WH01X24180 belt around the motor pulley first (ribbed side against the pulley), then stretch it over the transmission pulley — rotate the pulley by hand while guiding the belt on to seat it evenly. Confirm the belt is fully seated in the pulley grooves on both sides before restoring power. Run a short spin cycle to verify smooth operation and check for any squealing that would indicate improper belt seating.

💡 Pro Tip

Inspect Both Pulleys Before Installing the New Belt:
A worn or damaged pulley is the most common cause of premature belt failure — if the motor pulley or transmission pulley has a flat spot, crack, or rough edge, it will destroy the new belt within weeks. Spin each pulley by hand before installing the belt: it should rotate smoothly with no wobble, grinding, or resistance. Also clean any rubber debris from the old belt off the pulley grooves before installing the new one — debris buildup causes uneven belt wear and slipping from day one.

How do I know if my washer belt is broken or just worn?

Start a wash cycle and listen. If you hear the motor running (a steady humming or whirring from underneath) but the agitator doesn't move and the tub doesn't spin, the belt is either broken or has slipped off the pulleys. Tilt the washer back to visually inspect — a snapped belt will be in pieces or missing entirely. If the belt is still in place but the washer performance has been gradually declining (weaker agitation, slower spin, occasional squealing), the belt is stretched and worn. Check for cracks, fraying, a glazed shiny surface (should be matte), and black rubber dust underneath the washer. If the belt deflects more than 1/2" at the midpoint between pulleys, it's too loose and needs replacement. Don't wait for it to snap — a slipping belt strains the motor and clutch, potentially causing more expensive damage.
