WP73001165 Oven Glow Bar Igniter – When Your Oven Won't Light, This Is the Part That Failed
The glow bar igniter is the single most common reason a gas oven won't light. It heats to approximately 1,700–1,800°F to open the gas valve and ignite the burner — when it weakens or cracks, the oven either won't light at all or takes far too long. The WP73001165 is a 12-inch flat glow bar rated for 240V AC, replacing 73001165, 73001067, AP6010766, PS11743952, and WP73001067. Available as an XPart premium aftermarket option (in stock, ships immediately) or genuine OEM Whirlpool (NLA — no longer available from manufacturer).
Symptoms of a Failed Oven Igniter
- Oven won't light — igniter not glowing or glowing very dimly
- Oven takes more than 90 seconds to ignite (weak igniter, insufficient current to open gas valve)
- Oven lights intermittently or unreliably
- Oven flame is weak or unstable after lighting
- Oven takes longer than normal to preheat
- Visible cracks or damage on the igniter ceramic surface
- Burning smell from the oven area
- Complete oven failure — control board detecting igniter fault and shutting down

If your oven takes more than 90 seconds to ignite, the igniter is drawing insufficient current to fully open the gas valve — it's weakening, not yet dead. Test with a multimeter: a reading below ~2.5 amps indicates a failing igniter that needs replacement before it fails completely. Don't wait for a no-light situation — a slow igniter is costing you gas and risking incomplete combustion.
Installation Notes
- Skill Level: Intermediate — 20–30 minutes
- CRITICAL: Unplug the range or shut off the circuit breaker before starting
- WARNING: Never touch the ceramic element — surface reaches 1,700–1,800°F during operation. Allow full cool-down before working
- Remove oven bottom panel and burner cover to access the igniter
- Photograph all wire connections before disconnecting
- Disconnect wire harness, remove mounting screw, swap igniter
- Do not touch the ceramic element with bare hands — skin oils cause premature failure
- Reconnect harness, reassemble, restore power, and run a test cycle — igniter should glow within 10–15 seconds
