If your GE or Hotpoint dryer is making a loud squealing, squeaking, or grinding noise during operation, or the drum feels rough and difficult to turn by hand, a worn drum top bearing assembly is the most common cause. In most GE compact and standard dryers, the drum top bearing supports the front of the drum and allows it to rotate smoothly against the front bulkhead. When the bearing wears out, the drum begins to drag, producing a high-pitched squeal that worsens over time and can eventually cause the drum to seize or damage the drum seal. ⚡ Most common noise failure in GE compact dryers after 3–6 years of use. ✔ In most cases, replacing the bearing restores smooth, quiet drum rotation immediately.
Skill Level: MODERATE — 30–45 minutes. Unplug the dryer before beginning. Remove the front panel to access the drum and bearing assembly. Slide the drum forward to disengage it from the rear support, then unclip or unscrew the old bearing from the front bulkhead. Seat the new WW02L00556 bearing, reinstall the drum, reconnect the drive belt, and reassemble the front panel. Rotate the drum by hand before restoring power to confirm smooth, quiet movement.
