Why does my oven bake work but broil doesn't?

When your oven heats on bake but not on broil, the broil element has almost certainly failed. Electric ovens have two separate heating elements: the bake element at the bottom (for baking, roasting, and general cooking) and the broil element at the top (for broiling, browning, and toasting). Each element operates independently on its own circuit. When you select "Broil," only the broil element receives power; when you select "Bake," primarily the bake element receives power (though some ovens pulse the broil element during preheat). If the bake element heats and glows red but the broil element doesn't respond at all when broil mode is selected, the broil element has burned out — a break in the internal resistance coil prevents electricity from flowing through it. Visually inspect the broil element for damage: look for holes, cracks, blisters, dark burn spots, or sagging sections. You can also test it with a multimeter — a good element reads approximately 16–20 ohms; an open reading (OL) confirms it's burned out. Replacing the broil element is a straightforward 15–25 minute repair that restores your oven's ability to broil and brown food.
