280187 Whirlpool Washer Drain Pump – The complete fix for a Whirlpool washer that won't drain water after the cycle, has standing water in the tub when the cycle ends, makes a loud humming or buzzing noise during the drain phase but doesn't pump water, won't advance to the spin cycle (because the tub hasn't drained), leaks water from the bottom of the washer, or makes grinding noises during drain. The drain pump is the motorized pump at the bottom of the washer that removes all water from the tub during the drain and spin phases. It uses a spinning impeller inside a heavy-duty plastic housing to create suction, pulling water from the tub and pushing it out through the drain hose. Why won't my washer drain?

A washer that won't drain has a few common causes, starting with the most likely. First, check for a clogged drain pump filter — many front-load washers have an accessible filter trap behind the front lower panel. Open it (have towels ready — water will pour out), remove the filter, and clear any debris. This is the #1 cause and costs nothing to fix. Second, check the drain hose for kinks or clogs — disconnect the hose from the standpipe and look inside for blockages. Third, listen during the drain phase — if you hear the pump humming or buzzing but no water moves, the impeller is jammed by a foreign object (coin, button, hair pin). You may be able to clear it without replacing the pump. If the pump makes no sound at all during drain, the motor has burned out and the pump needs replacement. If the pump runs and sounds normal but water still won't drain, the drain hose may be clogged further down the line, or the standpipe itself may be blocked.
