❓ Is This the Right Part?

This is the correct fix if ALL of the following are true:

  • ✔ Your range powers on and other burners work normally
  • ✔ The surface element itself is confirmed good (swap-tested with a working same-size element)
  • ✔ The burner terminal block and wiring connections are intact
  • ✔ The control knob turns freely but the burner doesn’t respond correctly
  • ✔ ONLY problem is no heat, stuck-on-high, or erratic/inconsistent heat on one burner

Not sure? Send us your model number — we’ll confirm before you order.

🔧 Common Symptoms

  • Burner completely dead — no heat at any knob setting
  • Burner stuck on high — won’t turn down regardless of knob position
  • Burner only works on certain settings (e.g. High only, or Low only)
  • Erratic or inconsistent heat — temperature swings wildly during cooking
  • Burner cycles on and off irregularly with no pattern
  • Control knob turns but burner shows no response whatsoever

✔ If these symptoms match, the infinite switch is the most likely failed component in the system.

✔ In most cases, replacing this surface element switch restores normal burner operation immediately.

Part Details

  • Part Number: W10917724
  • Part Type: Surface element control switch (infinite switch)
  • Manufacturer: Whirlpool
  • Appliance Type: Range
⚠️ Recommended While Repairing:
While the burner knob and switch are accessible, inspect the surface element terminal block for heat damage or corrosion — a burned terminal block causes the same symptoms and will fail the new switch prematurely. Replace both together to avoid a repeat repair.

⚙️ Installation

Skill Level: MODERATE — 15–30 minutes. Disconnect power at the breaker before beginning — this switch handles 240V. Remove the burner knob, unscrew the control panel or backsplash to access the switch, photograph all wire terminal positions before disconnecting, swap the switch, and reconnect terminals in the same positions. Incorrect terminal placement will cause the same symptoms as a failed switch — double-check against your photo before reassembling.

💡 Pro Tip

💡 Pro Tip — Swap-Test the Element First:
Before ordering the switch, confirm the surface element is good by swapping it with a working same-size element from another burner. If the problem follows the element, you need an element — not a switch. If the problem stays at the same burner position regardless of which element is installed, the infinite switch W10917724 is your fix. This 2-minute test saves a return.

How do I know if my range burner switch is bad or the element is bad?

The easiest way to tell is the swap test. If you have two burners of the same size (e.g., two 8" or two 6" elements), swap the elements — unplug the non-working element and plug it into the receptacle of a working burner. Turn on the working burner's switch. If the element heats normally, the element is good and the original switch is bad — replace the switch. If the element still doesn't heat in the known-good receptacle, the element itself is burned out — replace the element. This test takes 2 minutes and definitively identifies whether the problem is the switch or the element. If you don't have two same-size burners, you can test the element with a multimeter (disconnect power, unplug the element, measure resistance across the terminal prongs — a good element reads 20–80Ω depending on wattage, OL means burned out). You can also test the switch by checking for voltage at the switch output terminals with the knob turned to High — but this requires working near 240V and should only be done by someone comfortable with electrical testing.
